Stephen McPhee (born 5 June 1981) is a Scottish former soccer player. In his 10-year playing career, that included clubs from the Netherlands, Scotland, England and Portugal. He was also capped by his country in the age group of under-21. As a forward He recorded 56 goals over the course of 252 matches across all tournaments.

The first club he played for was Coventry City, following a loan to St Mirren in 2001, He signed for Port Vale later in the year. He established himself at Vale where he played the bulk of his professional appearances during three seasons with the team. After leaving the club to join Beira-Mar from Portugal In 2005, he signed a major switch towards Hull City. The following year, he made the move to Blackpool. In 2010, he retired, after having a series of injuries from the time he was in Portugal.

He suffered a knee injury in only his fourth league appearance for City, and missed the rest of the 2005–06 season and the start of the 2006–07 season. He eventually returned to action in December 2006 away at Plymouth Argyle, which was also manager Phil Brown’s first match in charge of the club. He ended up missing most of the rest of the season again through injury.

McPhee joined Hull City on 19 May 2005 for a fee widely reported to be £220,000. However, the club website stated, “The Scottish striker joined the Championship-bound Tigers in a new club record deal with the McPhee fee reported in excess of £400,000 when Stephen was signed from Beira Mar in May 2005.”

McPhee was signed by Port Vale on a free transfer in July of 2001. He was soon to be Brian Horton’s most successful move to Port Vale. McPhee scored his first goal in the match against Notts County and finished the season as the club’s top scorer , scoring the club’s top scorer with 14 goals from 51 games with his goal in the Potteries derby. Paul Jewell’s Wigan Athletic made a bid for McPhee which was accepted by the club (PS300,000) but the deal was canceled when Wigan’s agent refused to accept the Scottishman’s contract offer. The 2002-03 season was that was largely without goals for the striker. his goal with Oldham Athletic in October ended the game without scoring, but only two goals came in the rest of the 34 games.

In Glasgow, McPhee began his career alongside and his twin sister Gary with the club Vitesse Arnhem in the Netherlands. In 1998, McPhee moved to England with Coventry City, but did not play a full-time game with Coventry City’s “Sky Blues”, who were playing in the Premier League. In 2001, Coventry placed the player as a loan player to Scottish Premier League club St Mirren which had been hoping to sign Ronaldinho but instead opted on the promising young McPhee. He played seven matches in”the “Saints” and won the April 2001 SPL Young Player of the Month Award.

A British club would have to negotiate a fee with the “Valiants” before talking to McPhee, however a foreign club would be free to sign him without dealing with Vale.
