Stephen Kakfwi is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on November 7, 1950 in Fort Good Hope, Northwest Territories, Canada. Stephen Kakfwi was conceived on December 7, 1950, in the traditional Dene bush camp in Fort Good Hope, Northwest Territories to full- blooded Slavey parents. His parents were not statutorily Slavey because of his grandfather’s refusal to sign treaties and rights in order to acquire the property and operate a fur trading business. In his early years Kakfwi was taken into residential school at Inuvik, Yellowknife and Fort Smith. In the 1970s, he attended in the University of Alberta to complete an education degree. However, during the same decade, he returned to the Fort Good Hope community during the time when Aboriginal Canadians were beginning to form political groups to demand the recognition and protection of their ancestral land as well as autonomy rights.

The year was 1987. Kakfwi was appointed to his seat in the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in the territory of Sahtu with a total area of 254,000 square kilometers in size. In his 16-year term within the Legislative Assembly, ending in 2003, Kakfwi played key roles in initiatives that ranged from economic development through encouraging the development in diamond polishing companies near local diamond mines, to his advocacy for Aboriginal rights, particularly during his time as the Minister of Northwest Territories from 2000 to 2003. His 16-year stint in the cabinet of Northwest Territories is the longest in the Territories and is the longest in the history of the Territories. Kakfwi continues to be a key player in the growth in the Northwest Territories through his advisory post with WWF Canada.

In October 2013, he was awarded the Governor General’s Northern Medal by David Johnston.

In 2014, he founded Canadians for a New Partnership, a coalition with a goal to build a new partnership between First Peoples and all Canadians.

In 1980 , Kakfwi contested Georges Erasmus for the Dene leadership position, but was defeated. When he ran in 1983 Kakfwi was again a candidate for the presidency of the Dene Nation and won, because Erasmus who was his opponent in 1980 was elected as the grand head in the Assembly of First Nations. As the President of the Dene Nation, Kakfwi established both the Northwest Territories Dene Cultural Institute as well as Indigenous Survival International (the latter was specifically focused upon hunting rights especially on areas like the Arctic). Kakfwi also supported the fight for land rights and also helped to create an outline for land claim negotiations. Both in 1984 and 1987 Pope John Paul II had scheduled trips to Northwest Territories, an effort that was made possible through the efforts of Kakfwi. While the 1984 trip was eventually postponed due to bad weather, Kakfwi remained to advocate for a visit to the territory in 1987.
