Stephen Belber (born March 3 1967) is an American screenwriter, playwright, and director of film. His plays have been staged on Broadway and in more than fifty countries. His film was adapted by his Broadway production, Match, starring Patrick Stewart, (playing the Tony nominated role invented in the play by Frank Langella). He also directed and wrote the film Management with Jennifer Aniston, Steve Zahn and Woody Harrelson and wrote the HBO film O.G., starring Jeffrey Wright, Theothus Carter, and William Fichtner. Belber also played the role of actor as well as an associate writer in The Laramie Project, (which eventually became an HBO film for which he won the Emmy nomination) and was co-writing The Laramie Project, Ten Years Later.

Belber’s most recent big project in 2001 resulted through his work on The Tectonic Theater Project. He researched and was an associate writer, and performed as a character in The Laramie Project, a play that was later made into a movie made in response to Matthew Shepard’s tragic assault at Laramie, Wyoming. The film that followed starred Laura Linney, Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Christina Ricci and Peter Fonda. Belber was honored with his first Emmy nomination in recognition of his role as a screenwriter for the film.

In 2002 and 2003, Belber wrote for the US TV series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He also wrote for the Denis Leary show Rescue Me.

Belber’s Broadway debut came in 2004 with his play Match starring Frank Langella, Ray Liotta, and Jane Adams, garnering Langella, a Tony nomination. The play has since been produced in France, Switzerland, Germany, Israel, Bosnia, and elsewhere.

The adaption of his stage play Tape was screened during The Sundance Film Festival in 2000.

Belber was born in Washington, D.C.. He was a philosophy student in Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut He graduated in 1989. He was a student in at the Trinity/La MaMa Performing Arts Program after graduating. He relocated into New York in 1992 and was employed in a variety of positions like waiting staff, substitute teachers as well as wire operator at the United Nations. The first performance he performed at the time in New York was a solo work called Psychotic Busboy Blues. In 1997, he was named the recipient of The Fringe NYC Overall Excellence Award for his playwriting work for Finally and in 2000 He won the same award for his play The Death of Frank. In 2000 The Actors Theatre of Louisville produced Belber’s Tape at the Humana Festival of New American Plays. The screenplay was written by Belber for the film adaptation in 2001 of his play Tape which was directed by Richard Linklater and starring Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, and Robert Sean Leonard.

The HBO film of The Laramie Project, on which he was an associate writer, premiered at Sundance in 2002.
