Maessen continued to record and perform up to 1988 when she released her final song, “Flashlight”, was released.

In 1981, and now known in the form of Stella, Maessen participated in the Belgian selection as a solo performer with the track “Veel te veel” (“Much Too Many”), which made it to the finals, but was not able to take home the prize. In 1982, she returned with the French song in French “Si tu aimes ma musique” (“If You Like My Music”) the song was a huge success and was selected until the 27th Eurovision in Harrogate, England on 24 April. Even though the contest was deemed to be an uncontested race (with the runaway German win), Maessen managed a impressive fourth place out among 18 entries, while also being the only contestant to being awarded points from each other nation.

In 1969, Maessen along with her older sister Patricia and Bianca created a group called Hearts of Soul. After a string of singles and an No. 11 chart smash featuring “Fat Jack”, they participated in their first Dutch Eurovision selection, where their song “Waterman” (“Aquarius”) won a narrow victory which allowed them to participate in their participation in the 15th Eurovision Song Contest, which was held on 21 March at their home stadium in Amsterdam. Technically, groups that had more than two singers were excluded from Eurovision at the time and to circumvent this , they announced themselves as “Patricia with The Hearts of Soul’, which implies the fact that Stella as well as Bianca were the backing singers for the lead vocalist of Patricia. In a tiny field of 12 “Waterman” placed seventh.
