She was a dancer in the Berlin State Opera from 1975 until 2003, prima ballerina at the time since 1987, and Director and teacher for the Tanz Akademie Zurich of the Zurcher Hochschule der Kunste.

Scherzer and Matz were directors and teachers at The Tanz Akademie Zurich from the Zurcher Hochschule der Kunste from 2004 when they founded the institute. The institute was named after their previous “Schweizerische Ballettberufsschule” (Swiss ballet vocational school). Students have been awarded prizes in competitions like those at the International Ballet Competition in Cape Town.

Scherzer was a leading dancer in ballets of classical and neo-classical styles and also as a guest dancer from around the world and choreographer, working with choreographers like Patrice Bart Maurice Bejart, William Forsythe, Pierre Lacotte, Roland Petit and Uwe Scholz. She was the lead for the Tchaikovsky ballet Dornroschen (The Sleeping Beauty) along with Rudolf Nureyev, and the double role of Odette/Odile from the Tchaikovsky ballet Schwanensee (Swan Lake) with Oliver Manz. The performance of Schwanensee choreographed composed by Patrice Bart, and conducted by Daniel Barenboim, was filmed and broadcast live in the cinema in Berlin and in 100 cinemas across France. The show was produced for television on December 28, 1998. She was a dancer in William Forsythe’s choreography for Steptext along with Uwe Krotil Ralf Stengel, and Oliver Wulff. A reviewer noted: “Uberragend Steffi Scherzer in rotem Trikot, die die extremen Korper- und Raumspannungen eindrucksvoll verkorpert.” (Outstanding Steffi Scherzer in a red shirt, who represents the most extreme tensions in space and physical.) When Scherzer was forced to retire from theatre in 2003 she was made as an honored member of Deutsche Staatsoper.
