Stefan Szczesny is one of the most popular and richest Sculptor who was born on April 9, 1951 in Munich, Germany. Stefan Szczesny (born 9 April 1951) is a German painter, draughtsman and sculpturer. He is most well- known for his role in the founding of the Neue Wilde movement in the early 80s.
Szczesny has been one of the key figures from his time in the Neue Wilde. The year 1982 was the first time he took part in a variety of “Neue Wilde”-related exhibitions like “5 aus Koln” (“5 from Cologne” which featured Walter Dahn, Jiri Dokoupil, Gerhard Kever and Andreas Schulze) and “Die neue Kunstlergruppe Die wilde Malerei” (“The new group of artists: Wild painting”) Both were held in Cologne. From 1984 until 1988, he was editor of”Malerei. Peinture. Painting,” a journal “Malerei. Peinture. Painting” which provided an important platform for emerging figurative artists.
The first comprehensive retrospective of Szczesny’s work followed in 1988, curated by Klaus Honneff at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn.
In late 80s and early 90s, Szczesny’s work was shown in many exhibitions. The artist, during these years, discovered his love of the Caribbean, evinced for instance in his Jamaica paintings of 1990. But Szczesny was engaged in other projects, too. For instance, he painted a series of portraits of personal “culture heroes”, from Bach to James Joyce, Marcel Proust, Glenn Gould and Jimi Hendrix. He also created comprehensive stage designs (e.g. for Gert Pfafferodt’s production of Schiller’s “Kabale und Liebe”).
The break wasn’t instantaneous however, as in 1979, for example, the artist exhibited abstract works in the Kunstforum of the Stadtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus; several of the paintings he made during his stay in the Villa Romana in Florence in 1980 also display abstract elements. However, it was through his figurative painting that Szczesny was able to gain a lot of public attention, particularly because he was the curator of and participant in the exhibition in 1981 Rundschau Deutschland. Rundschau Germany brought together the work from a range of young German-speaking figurative artists who were later called”the Neue Wilde.

Stefan Szczesny was born in Munich as the son of writer and philosopher Gerhard Szczesny and his wife Martha Meuffel, a theatre producer. After attending both primary and secondary schools in Munich where he got his first experience as a painter in an art school for private students situated in Munich (1967-9). From 1969 to 1975 he was a student with Munich’s Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. His teacher was the abstract artist Gunter Fruhtrunk. At the time the artist also was a student of philosophy and art history from Ludwig Maximilian University and worked as an art critic freelance.
In the direction of the mentorship of Fruhtrunk Szczesny began to experiment in these times with minimalist and abstract art. A significant change in direction occurred in the years 1975-76, during which Szczesny had been in Paris as a recipient of a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service. The meeting with the works of Delacroix led Szczesny to reconsider the tenets of minimalist and abstract art and eventually return to the idea of figuration.
More than other Neue Wilde painters, however, Szczesny was (and still is) interested in art historical tradition. In a 1985 interview, for instance, Szczesny remarked: “If Cézanne paints Bathers, whom Titian, Delacroix and Courbet had painted before, and Renoir paints them and Picasso paints them again, and Matisse paints them again, then Szczesny, too, paints them again!” It is in line with this declaration that in 1982/83, the year after the Neue Wilden explosion, Szczesny – in Rome at the time, as the recipient of the Rome Prize of the Prussian Academy of Arts – turned his attention to the roots of European art. He created a series of “Roman paintings” exploring the world of Greco-Roman myth. Similarly, in 1984 he created a number of paintings focusing on the (Ovidian) theme of metamorphosis; these were exhibited in one of Szczesny’s largest early exhibitions, alongside ancient sculpture at the Glyptothek and Staatliche Antikensammlung in Munich.
