Stefan Gruber (born December 8 1975) is an American experimental artist and animator from Seattle, Washington. They produce hand-drawn, digitally edited experimental animation shorts. They are also the Animation Department founder and teacher at The Nova Animation Project and the creator of the Seattle Experimental Animation Team (SEAT).

Gruber created 3 Way Soccer at The Nova Project in 2005. The game is an unconventional sports workshop that has constantly changing rules that are vaguely similar to soccer. The game lasts for one hour long, during the first 40 minutes during which the ball is playing for the remainder of 20 moments are used to determine the guidelines of the sport will be changed for the following game. In every game, three teams are assembled on a circular field and a big yoga ball is utilized instead of soccer balls. The interplay between three opposing teams produce what Gruber refers to as”a “dance-related trajectory”.

Both Worlds is a triptych mural installation in Seattle’s Cal Anderson Park, painted in the summer of 2012 for the Sound Transit Art Program (STart). According to the STart blog, the “wall is meant to be a cartoon place where characters from Stefan’s previous films can go to relax.”

Evaporation animation technique was invented for this show, and dancers modeled their movements to be sampled into a 5-minute piece that accompanied the live modern dance performance at Hedreen Gallery in 2012.

After graduation, Gruber returned to Seattle to be a spokesperson for the idea that is Experimental Animation. In 2001 they went back in 2001 to Nova High School to found their animation program, as well as it was named the Nova Animation Portal, an annual grant to support the department. Gruber is still teaching today as the head for the Animation Department. Gruber is also the founder of the Seattle Experimental Animation Team (SEAT) an organization of filmmakers and animators who produce independent, non-commercial animated efforts to promote awareness of the scene of independent animation in Seattle.
