Stav Shaffir (Hebrew: stayv SHapiyr ; born on May 17, 1985) is an Israeli politician from Israel. Her party is led by the Green Party, who was an active part of the Knesset for the Democratic Union alliance. She gained national recognition by being one of the organizers during the 2010 Israeli demonstrations for social justice with a focus on public services, housing inequalities, democracy and income as well as later becoming the spokesperson to the protest movement. She was later appointed as a member of Knesset in

Knesset on the 13th of December 2013 an official participant in the Labor Party in 2013. The Labor Party was a candidate in the elections of 2015 as a one of members of the Zionist Union alliance, with Shaffir keeping her seat. Shaffir was elected again during the April 2019 elections where Labor did not run as a solo candidate. After losing an Labor leadership contest in favor of Amir Peretz in June 2019 she resigned from the party and left the Knesset and was appointed the head of the Green Movement. The new party she founded was it as the Democratic Union alongside Meretz and the Israel Democratic Party. Shaffir was sacked from the Knesset Seat in the 2020 elections.

Shaffir along Daphni Leef and Itzik Shmuli, was one of the organizer, founder, and non-official organizer of the Israeli Social Justice protests which saw 400,000 Israelis take out in the streets for an array of demonstrations in public.

In May 2012, Shaffir joined 10,000 protestors demanding that the proposed 2013 Israeli State Budget be made more favorable to middle and lower income Israelis. Shaffir appointed a team of volunteers to investigate the budgetary transfers and eventually brought her concerns to the Supreme Court, which ruled that the Finance Ministry must reach a compromise with Shaffir on a new method for budget transfers by February 2015.

In February 2012, Shaffir and fellow tent protesters Alon Lee-Green and Yonatan Levi founded the Israeli Social Movement. In August 2012, Shaffir and her colleagues embarked on a tour from the southern sea port of Eilat to Kiryat Shmona on the Lebanese border, to listen to activists and citizens regarding their concerns. Their last status was published in Facebook on 9 September 2012, and a month later Shaffir announced her intent to run for the Knesset as a member of the Labor Party.

On July 17, 2011 Shaffir engaged in a debate with MK Miri Regev on the TV programme Erev Hadash about the protest against the rising cost of housing. In the months following she was instrumental in establishing more than 120 tent camps across Israel and led protests, which included that of the March of the Million, and advocated together with the Knesset to support the social justice agenda. Shaffir was a representative for Israeli media and also represented the movement’s cause in international media outlets. In 2012, she was an invited key note speaker for three U.S.-based gatherings: J-Street, together with Israeli writer Amos Oz, the Jewish Federations of North America’s TribeFest and the Personal Democracy Forum.

Stav Shaffir was born and raised in Netanya, Israel, and is of Iraqi-Jewishand Polish-Jewish and Lithuanian-Jewish descent. She also has Romanian-Jewish. When she was 12 Shaffir’s family relocated to Pardesiya which is a town located in the Sharon region. There, her parents owned an accounting company. Shaffir was a member of HaNoar HaOved VeHaLomed (Federation of working and studying youth). After graduating from high school, Shaffir was employed for a full year in Tiberias as part of a volunteer organization that was affiliated to the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel. She joined the Israel Defense Forces as a trainee in the flight school part of the Israeli Air Force. After five months, she started writing in Bamahane, the IDF publication, Bamahane. In her new position, she wrote about the Israeli withdrawing from Gaza as well as the 2006 Lebanon conflict.

After her military service was completed and enlisting in the Olive Tree Scholarship Program by the City University of London, an initiative that aims to help future leaders who want to alter the current situation of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict. While studying in London Shaffir served as an intern for Parliament. She was named runner-up at the JRS Competition for Student Journalists in 2008 for her work that covered Iraqi refugees living in England. Shaffir earned an B.A in Journalism and Sociology in 2009. Shaffir performs on the drums, piano, guitar as well as violin and oud furthered her study with her family in Israel in the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in Ramat-HaSharon for a period of one year. She then entered the M.A program at the Cohn Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Ideas in Tel Aviv University.

Shaffir worked as a freelance journalist and an editor for National Geographic, the Ha’ir weekly newspaper, the Mako Magazine and Yedioth Ahronoth internet site Xnet, where she published the first article to appear in the Israeli media about the 2011 Israeli social justice protests.

Shaffir with MKs Yehiel Bar and Orly Levi launched a lobby for the advancement of fair rent after a report prepared by the Knesset Research and Information Center found that rents across Israel had increased by 49% since 2007.
