Stanka Zlateva is one of the most popular and richest Professional Wrestler who was born on March 1, 1983 in Krushare, Bulgaria. Stanka Zlateva Hristova (Bulgarian: Stanka Zlateva Khristova ; born 1 March 1983 in Krushare, Sliven Province) is a former female Bulgarian freestyle wrestler. She participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens as well as at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and won silver medals at both of these events. She was named the World Female Wrestlers of the Year in 2006 and 2007, and Bulgarian Sportspersons of the Year in 2007 in 2010 and 2011.

Zlateva placed first in her age group in the 2007 and 2006 2008, 2010, and the 2011 World Championships (in Baku, Guangzhou, Tokyo, Moscow and Istanbul respectively) She placed third at the 2009 World Championships (Herning) fourth for the year 2004 (New York City) Fifth the year 2005 (Budapest) 7th at the 2001 World Championships (Sofia) as well as eight for 2002 (Chalcis).

On 19 December 2011, Zlateva was honoured with the title of Bulgarian Sportsperson of the Year for the third time since the start of her wrestling career, becoming joint equal with Boyan Radev regarding the number of times a Bulgarian wrestler had won the distinction.

After the 2012 Summer Olympics, Zlateva took a break from wrestling which lasted until April 2014, when she switched to the 75 kg category.

She has also won five European championships to her name, including winning the 2006 2007 and 2007 titles, as well as the 2009 and the 2010 title (Moscow, Sofia, Tampere, Vilnius and Baku respectively) in addition to placing second in 2005, and in 2011 (Varna as well as Dortmund) as well as fourth in 2003, and fifth in 2004.

Stanka Zlateva was raised in the family of athletes. Her coach was her brother, which was older by eight years. He was an Olympic wrestler and had won medals at high school competitions. He taught the young Stanka in various sports starting at the age 10 years old. He admits that his daughter’s performance in sports was a surprise in such a way that, soon grappling with the younger brother turned into an extremely challenging task that provided a tremendous training opportunity for the youngster. When she reached twelve, she could wrestle her brother to the ground in just a few seconds during wrestling matches. Despite his desire to fulfill his own goals in training the girl was not keen on wrestling her 20-year old brother. In a wrestling match that was not formal in her 13th year she faced off against an older male 17 years old champion from Sliven, the provincial capital of Sliven in Bulgaria. She took him down just two minutes after the start to the contest. The incident attracted an increase in attention for Zlateva’s skills in wrestling. In 1997, at the age of 14 she was officially involved in training for wrestling by a professional trainer, Demir Demirev and later she was taught by Valeri Raychev at the Kyustendil sports club, as well as the national team and also working with Ognyan Raychev, who is a member of the team of nationals. Since 2006 she has competed with Levski Sofia, where her coach is a former World champion as well as triple European Champion Simeon Schterev. Zlateva previously attended the school of sports “Pierre de Coubertin” in Yambol.

Her first appearance was as a Bulgarian female wrestler in the Olympics when women’s wrestling was introduced during the 2004 Games in Athens, and Zlateva was the representative of Bulgaria at the Games, placing 12th. In 2008, at the Olympics in Beijing Zlateva was hoping to be the first woman to win gold but fell to surprising champ Wang Jiao of the People’s Republic of China in the final. She was selected to compete in the 2012 Olympics by virtue of being the Gold medalist at her 2011 World Wrestling Championships.

In late 2010, it was revealed that Zlateva had been offered to compete for Azerbaijan at the 2012 Olympics, but had steadfastly refused to discuss any such possibility with the Azeris, as she would only be willing to represent Bulgaria. She had previously turned down similar attempts by Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to encourage a nationality switch.
