A little over one month later, Martin O’Neill had snapped up the defender on a one-year contract. Even though he made just one appearance for Celtic at the period, he was awarded with a two-year deal at the end of July. He was always present in the team during the 2003-04 season and assisted the new teammates to national success, winning the domestic dual in the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Cup. For the League, Varga helped Celtic score only 25 goals which enabled Celtic to establish the record for league play with 25 consecutive wins (32 games that were unbeaten since the beginning in the campaign) and 77 league home games without losing. Through the entire season Varga was an important player in the Celtic defense. He even managed for six occasions, one of which came in Celtic’s 3-1 defeat against A.C. Milan in the UEFA Champions League Group Stage. At the time, the player, just like Stilian Petrov, before him was able to have his name shortened by the Celtic supporters. Sunderland released Varga at the end of the 2007–08 season.
His strong and powerful presence, ability in the air and no nonsense defending has made him a rising fan favourite at the Stadium of Light. Having to act as a substitute behind first choice centre half Nyron Nosworthy, the Slovak chose a one-month loan deal to Burnley on 4 January 2008 to regain match-fitness. He was named in the Championship Team of the Week for his performance in Burnley’s 1–0 win over Plymouth Argyle, his first league game for the club.
He was on loan from 2001-02 on loan at West Bromwich Albion, helping the club climb up into the Premier League. The imposing centre back was able to return from a long-term injury to be ruled absent from the first-team picture. His final game prior to going on loan ended when he was kicked off at the half- time whistle during the match at Old Trafford, where Sunderland were defeated 4-1. In the absence of Bjorklund as well as Jody Craddock in front of him, Varga never really found his way back into the squad and was released in January of 2003.

Varga was first discovered in the eyes of Peter Reid when playing for Slovakia in a friendly match against Norway prior to Euro 2000 and impressed the Black Cats’ boss with his ability to keep Tore Andre Flo and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer out of the game.
Varga, a powerful and tall centre-back, was signed to the club by Peter Reid for PS875,000 from Slovan Bratislava during the summer of 2000.
