Born as the second child of a businessman and collector Theodor Ahrenberg (1912-89) and Ulla Ahrenberg (born Frisell), Ahrenberg spent his childhood in Stockholm and Chexbres, Switzerland, where his family relocated in the year 1962. The artist was introduced to his work at the age of five through his father’s vast collection that was assembled in the 1940s and 1980s and containing works of Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Le Corbusier, Olle Baertling, Sam Francis, Mark Tobey and Lucio Fontana. The most important modernist pieces that were part of the collection include matisse’s two different versions Apollo (1953) as well as Picasso’s Nude in sitting chair (1956) along with Chagall’s Les maries sous le baldaquin (1949). The introduction of Ahrenberg to contemporary art was through the atelier of the property of his family located at Chexbres which was where artists like Christo, Tadeusz Kantor, Enrico Baj, Jean Tinguely as well as Niki De Saint Phalle resided and were active between 1962 and 1977.
In 2011, Ahrenberg purchased Cahiers d’Art, a publishing gallery, house, and revue located at 14 rue du Dragon, Paris and established in 1926 by the art journalist and historian Christian Zervos (1889-1970). The 18th of October, 2012 Ahrenberg launched Cahiers d’Art with the first issue of the eponymous magazine since 1960, devoted to work by Ellsworth Kelly, and co-authored by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Sam Keller. The subsequent issues have continued collaborations with prominent living artists, including Rosemarie Trott, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Gabriel Orozco. Cahiers d’Art publications produced by Ahrenberg include Calder by Matter (2012), Ellsworth Kelly: Catalogue Raisonne of Reliefs, Paintings and sculpture. Vol. 1 1940-1953 (2015), Thomas Schutte: Watercolors for Robert Walser and Donald Young, 2011-2012 (2016) The most notable is the 2013 reissue of the catalogue raisonne 33 volumes Pablo Picasso by Christian Zervos (the “Zervos”), initially issued between 1932 and the year 1978.
Ahrenberg also coordinates exhibitions, both those at the Cahiers d’Art Paris gallery spaces such as “Hiroshi Sugimoto” (2014) and “Miró” (2018), and at other institutions such as “Le Corbusier. The Secrets of Creativity: Between Painting and Architecture” at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow (2012) and “Moment – Le Corbusier’s Secret Laboratory” at Moderna Museet in Stockholm (2013).
Ahrenberg has been collecting contemporary and modern works of art from 1977 onward, starting with geometrical art such as that by Auguste Herbin and Josef Albers. The current collection includes pieces of Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky and the late Le Corbusier, Richard Serra, Robert Longo, Wolfgang Tillmans, Cildo Meireles, Jenny Holzer, Martin Kippenberger and Adrian Villar Rojas, among numerous others.

Staffan Ahrenberg (born 27 September 1957 in Stockholm) is a Swedish artist as well as entrepreneur, film maker as well as the owner and editor of the French publishing house Cahiers d’art.
In 1975, Ahrenberg met producer Alexander Salkind (1921-97), producer of Superman (1978) with Marlon Brando.
