Hookom was born the 22nd of July 1975 located in Denver, Colorado, though she grew up within Edwards, Colorado, and started skiing at the age of 3. When she was 14 she started snowboarding after she and a friend attended a free lesson in the Vail Ski Resort, though she mostly competed in alpine ski, along with some freeriding until she decided to pursue snowboarding for “better opportunities,” entering her first snowboard competition at age 17. She was a student at an institution called the University of Colorado Boulder, in which she was a part of her Legacy Sorority Alpha Phi, and cites the support of her mother and her sisters in sorority to help her to maintain a strong working ethic and maintain a regular lifestyle as well as. As she competed throughout college and university, she put her classes in a pause and then resume them after injuries (including ACL tears) caused her to need to suspend snowboarding for a time.

In 1996, at the FIS World Snowboard Championships in 1996, Hookum started her career with a 8th place finish in the parallel slalom, and 12th for the grand slalom.

In January 2007, Hookum retired at age 31 and returned to the University of Colorado Boulder to finish her degree. She moved to Houston, Texas, and planned on going to school to become a physician assistant; she stated that she would like to coach but her geographical location made that difficult.

At the year 1995 World Cup, Hookum placed fifth overall in the giant slalom. Stacia Hookom (July 22 1975) is an ex- American snowboarder. She was also the first woman selected to the inaugural U.S. Snowboarding team in 1994-1995 , and has had numerous places (including the first) at the FIS Snowboard World Cup and the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix. She also holds six national championships. Hookum quit in 2007 at age 31.

The year 1994 was the first time Hookom became the very first female to be part of her first U.S. Snowboarding team. She remarked on the changes that snowboarding had undergone throughout her time: “For me, the most difficult change was when breakaway poles were replaced with stubbies in slalom.My favorite event was slalom and the poles gave me my timing and rhythm in the event. So, when we lost the poles the event just was not the same.” In an interview prior to the time that she retired, she said that in the beginning, “lots of people still competed in all events. Sometimes the ‘stylers’ would show up and enter the races. I usually did the halfpipe. Now, the sports are so competitive it is really impossible to do them all.”
