Moving from Vineland, New Jersey at the age of 14 Martinez took art classes in Glassboro State College, where she graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor in Fine Arts with a focus on design. She also holds an Associate of Liberal Arts degree in the psychology field in Cumberland County College, Vineland, New Jersey in 1978.

In 1996, Martinez was appointed by the governor of New Jersey, Christine Todd Whitman, to a seat on the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, where she was a member until she resigned in 2000.
