At the two World Rowing Cups that New Zealand took part in they finished third, being beaten by various nations at the regattas. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro later that year, they finished fourth in the light double sculls. It was disappointing for the pair. In the following months later, MacKenzie announced that she “needed a break” for 12 months. She was determined to keep her body in shape however, she would also pursue other activities she’d always been curious about for a long time. One of them was starting her yoga teacher training alongside her partner Megan Craig. Her rowing partner over the past couple of seasons, Edward, would also be taking a year off. Both of them will take the rowing season of 2018 on vacation, but neither has yet announced their plans to retire.

The 2012 World Rowing U23 Championships in Trakai, Lithuania, she was awarded a bronze medal for the lightweight women’s U23 double sculls along with Georgia Hammond. In 2013, at the World Rowing U23 Championships in Linz, Austria, she also won a bronze award in that same class of boat, but this time alongside Lisa Owen. In 2014, at the World Rowing U23 Championships in Varese, Italy, she won the U23 world title for this class of boat along with Zoe McBride. Just a week before the world championships for U23, she was informed that she was going to row at an top level in the 2014 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, Netherlands, with Julia Edward. Lucy Strack, Edward’s previous partner, had not been selected in 2014. MacKenzie and Edward were able to spend five weeks training together prior to the world championships.
