The year 2006 was the time that Hartnett had been involved in controversy over his publication Landscape with Animals, published under the pseudonym Cameron S. Redfern. The book has a number of sexual scenes, and Hartnett was shortly thereafter “outed” as the author. Hartnett said she was trying to ensure that the book was not misplaced in the same library as her children’s books in libraries, and she claimed that she did not use an identity that was not her own to avoid accountability for her work or to promote it as an advertising stunt similar to the Nikki Gemmell book The Bride Stripped Bare. In a critique published by The Age, Peter Craven critiqued the book and described that it was an “overblown little sex shocker” as well as it was a “tawdry little crotch tickler” and remarked it was a shame that Hartnett did not appear to be “too good a writer to put her name to this indigestible hairball of spunk and spite”. The book was vigorously defended within The Australian by Marion Halligan (“I haven’t read any books written by Hartnett but I think this is an impressive work of art than any other”) which scolded Craven for not getting the point (“How can a seasoned critic make that mistake?”) and wondered why female writers writing about sexuality in a straightforward manner are not viewed with respect.
The majority of Hartnett’s works were published in the UK and North America. The book Thursday’s Children (2000, UK 2002) she was awarded her annually awarded Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize, the only time in history that a book is that was judged by a panel comprised of British children’s authors. In 2008, she was awarded the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award that is managed through The Swedish Arts Council.
