She was a representative for the nation at an World Junior Championship in hurdles before becoming a rower in which she twice was an Olympic athlete and was awarded silver medals at the World Rowing Championship. She then took on the sport of cycling and also won medals at a UCI Para-cycling Track World Championship as an sighted guide.
She took home silver at the year 2001 at World Rowing Championships in the quadruple sculls. She was competing alongside Paula Twining and twins Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell. In 2003’s World Rowing Championships, she participated in single sculls, and finished seventh.
In 2011, she won the New Zealand Cycling Time Trial Championship.
Waddell is daughter of the former All Black Alistair Scown and sister of the rugby athlete Hayden Scown. She was married in 1998. got married to another rower, Rob Waddell. The rower Rebecca Scown is her cousin.

She was a representative of New Zealand in the 400 metres hurdles at 1990 World Junior Championships in Athletics in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
She was the first national to represent her country in rowing in the 1995 World Rowing Championships in Tampere, Finland, where she was 9th in women’s quadruple-sculls. From 1997, she began competing in the single sculls in addition, at World Rowing Championships in 1997 1998, 1999, and 1997 she finished in the top three spots, which was tenth, tenth, and fifth and fifth, respectively. In both the 2004 and 2000 Summer Olympics she continued to compete in single sculls, finishing sixth and fifthrespectively.
At the 2011 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships she took one gold and one bronze as a pilot, with teammate Jayne Parsons.
