Soma Norodom is one of the most popular and richest Journalist who was born on October 29, 1969 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The Princess Soma was born in Phnom Penh in 1969, six years before the surrender of Phnom Penh’s capital in the hands of Khmer Rouge. Khmer Rouge. The year 1975 was the time her dad took her along with her family to relocate at Long Beach, California where she was raised. After graduation at Chaffey High School in Ontario, Soma attended CSU Fresno receiving a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications in 1993 , with the focus on news and public issues. She then earned an advanced master’s degree in mass communications from CSUF at the end of 1996. She was married Everett Balber in Fresno, however, she divorced her husband in 2005. After a string of jobs in marketing and media, Soma decided to return to Cambodia in 2010 to take care of her father, whose health had started to decline.

In 2012, depressed by the deplorable state that the typical Cambodian as well as the extent of corruption within Cambodia’s media and government, Soma became a columnist for a major newspaper called The Phnom Penh Post. Her column, titled “Royal Rebel, The Social Agenda with Princess Soma Norodom” quickly became the most-read section of the paper. Not willing to accept the bribes offered by the government to write positive articles, Soma wrote columns aimed at exposing flaws in Cambodian society, such as corruption and the flaws in the Royal Family. After writing a piece titled “We Should Be United” discussing the potential direction of the family of royals She was charged with “incitement” and briefly detained. While she was unable to retract her article after being released, she was let go and charges were dismissed. She’s stated that she was worried about her life at the time.

Her father, Prince Vatvani Norodom, a 3rd cousin of both the current Norodom Sihamoni and the current king Norodom Sihamoni and former Prime Minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh, was a lieutenant-colonel with the Khmer Air Force during the Cambodian Civil War assigned as the commander for Battambang Air Force Base. In 1971, he became a full-colonel, and was appointed Cambodian Rep of the US Forces in Vietnam. Then, he was posted as the military liaison officer of the USAF in Udorn at the border of Thailand until the fall of Phnom Penh when he fled with his family to the United States. When he returned back to Cambodia at the end of 1993, he received appointed general and later lieutenant-general. He was named the Commander-in-Chief of Royal Cambodian Air Force, an office was held until 1997. Cambodian Coup which resulted in Hun Sen establishing his authority and exiled Ranariddh along with his associates. Her father was killed during the 2012 Cambodian Coup in Phnom Penh in 2012.
