Sofia Samatar (born October 24 in 1971) is an American poet, educator and writer. She is an Assistant Professor of English at James Madison University. She released the novel that won awards for its fantasy A Stranger in Olondria.

As a child, Samatar lived in various locations around the globe. She was a student at an Mennonite high school. Later, to further her education Samatar attended Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana. The college graduated the school in 1994 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts from English. in 1997 Samatar received a Masters degree in African literature and languages from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison, Wisconsin. She then earned her Ph.D. in 2013 at the same institution in the same subject and specialized in modern Arabic literature. Her dissertation was on her favorite Sudanese author Tayeb Salih.

In 2013, Samatar joined the California State University Channel Islands’ faculty as an Assistant Professor of English. She taught writing and literature, and also established the institution’s first Arabic class. In the fall of 2016, she joined the faculty of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
