Sofi Marinova Biography

Sofi Marinova is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on December 5, 1975 in Sofia, Sofia Province, Bulgaria. Sofi Marinova was born the 5th of December 1975, in Sofia, Bulgaria, although her family lived near Etropole when she was born. She displayed dancing and musical talent as young as two, and was taught dancing and singing from her mom. In the primary school, Marinova was a top student. She attended for a year an elite builders’ school. In 8th grade, she transferred to a school that was specialized for tailors. However, afterward she admitted that she didn’t like sewing. When she was in school, Marinova was a performer and was a part of school musicals like Snow White. In 10th year, the local group offered her the job of the lead singer. Her father was not keen initially but eventually complied with her mother’s insistance: “I started crying and my mother supported me, because when she married my father she put an end to her singing career”.

In 2008, Marinova and Ustata participated in a campaign to stop human trafficking. For this, they wrote Chuzhdi ustni (A Stranger’s Lips). They both travelled throughout Bulgaria and met with young people who were in risk groups of being victimized by human trafficking. In 2010, Marinova was appointed ambassador to combat social and economic poverty. Her duties include raising awareness of the issue and taking part in various events and sharing her personal experience. In her interview, she said to reporters: “I think I can be useful to the campaign. In addition I myself come from a poor family and I’m aware of the concerns of poor and underprivileged people.”

Sofi Marinova was chosen to represent Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest in Baku in May 2012 with the song “Love Unlimited”. She won the National final, which was held on February 29, receiving a total of 20 points – the maximum 12 points from the public and 8 points from the jury. She was one of the favourites to win after coming second in the public vote in the semifinals. The song “Love Unlimited” was written by Yassen Kotsev and Krum Georgiev. Its lyrics talk about the transcending and all-embracing power of love (“The song has no borders, language and colour”).) The song is in Bulgarian but contains the phrase “I love you” in Turkish, Greek, Spanish, Serbo-Croat, French, Romani, English, Azerbaijani and Italian. The song is characterised by the typical Romani glides, vocal power and Techno musical arrangement. Marinova performed in the first half of the second semifinal on May 24 and narrowly missed out on qualifying for the grand final, finishing 11th place and scoring the same number of points as Norway who got through in 10th place.

It was her third appearance on this year’s Bulgarian national finals of Eurovision. Her 2005 song along with Slavi Trifonov “Edinstveni” (“Only Ones”) was a second place finish. They attempted to do it again the next year, with the track “Ljubovta e otrova” (“Love is a poison”) However, they fell out of the qualification stage when they finished 25th just one spot less than the semi-final. 2007 saw her song together with Ustata, “Ya Tvoya” (“I’m yours” in Russian) placed at third place at the National final.

Marinova has one son, called Lorenzo, with whom she has had some collaboration singles. She was married once (to Lorenzo’s father Peter). She then had a long-term relationship with Dacho, who is Peter’s eldest son. They tried to marry two times, but they didn’t and finally broke up in 2010. She is well known for her honest and direct answers to media’s questions in interviews. She is the father of Deni.
