Simon Taufel is one of the most popular and richest Australian cricket umpire who was born on January 21, 1971 in St Leonards, Australia. Simon James Arthur Taufel, (born 21 January 1971 in St Leonards, New South Wales)(49 years old) was a former Australian cricket umpire, who was previously as a member of the ICC Elite umpire panel. He was awarded 5 consecutive ICC Umpires of the Awards from 2004 to 2008 and was widely regarded to be the top umpire of all time during his tenure. His retirement announcement was announced on the 26th of September 2012, following an appearance in the 2012. ICC World Twenty20 final. He was later appointed an ICC Umpire Performance as well as Training Manager from October 2015 to the present.

Taufel was named the ICC Umpire of the Year award during the first five years it was in presence (2004-2008). His winning streak was ended in October 2009 when Aleem Dar from Pakistan took home the ICC Umpire of the Year award.

On 3 March 2009, Taufel was one of the officials caught in the attack on the Sri Lanka cricket team by terrorists in Lahore, Pakistan. He along with Chris Broad criticised the Pakistan security forces’ response to the incident.

Taufel quit international cricket after the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, at which he was umpiring at the time. He stepped down from cricket’s elite panel of umpires to take over a new role as the ICC’s Umpire Performance and Training Manager. He resigned from that role in October 2015.

Taufel played his debut One Day International (ODI) on the 13th of January, 1999, in the game of Australia as well as Sri Lanka at Sydney when he was just 27 years old. He was the umpire for his first test match in December of 2000 – in the Boxing Day Test between Australia and West Indies at Melbourne. He joined the Emirates International Panel of ICC Umpires in 2002. He was selected to umpire during the 2003 Cricket World Cup.

Taufel was a player in the Cammeray Cricket Club in the Northern Suburbs Cricket Association as a medium-speed bowler. Following the 1990-1991 season, the club awarded him its best and fairest prize, was the most prolific in taking wickets with the lowest bowling rate within the association. The short time he played was caused due to an injury to his back.

Although at first he had no intentions to become an umpire, he decided to go with a colleague to an umpiring training course. After passing the examination, he started umpiring Grade cricket. He quickly rose up the ranks before making his debut as a first-class umpire in 1995, just 24.

Taufel has been named the top umpire of the year five times, and in August 2006 the ICC’s annual umpire review officially ranked second for accuracy (behind Darrell Hair), and top overall. He umpired in the final of the 2004 Champions Trophy. At the 2006 Champions Trophy he umpired a semi-final, but could not umpire the final because Australia had reached the final. In January 2007 he became the youngest umpire to stand in 100 ODIs, and in April 2007 took charge of the World Cup semi-final between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, again being ineligible for the final which featured Australia. He umpired alongside Aleem Dar in the final of the 2011 Cricket World Cup between Sri Lanka and India, gaining the opportunity to do so after Australia were knocked out by India in the Quarter Finals.
