Halliday also played in the rugby union with Oxford University from 1979 to 1981, and played in three Varsity matches. He then played in the Bath Rugby Club. His career in sport was halted due to a serious injury to his leg while playing in the match for Somerset in the match against Middlesex at the Rugby Union County Championship in 1983. He recovered and worked towards making it to the England national team, and made his debut at 1985’s Five Nations. He quickly formed what appeared at first to be a steady and durable centre-back relationship along with Will Carling, only to be forced to sit on the bench in 1989 and 1990 due to the rise of Jeremy Guscott as Carling’s centre partner (since Carling, as captain was guaranteed his own spot in the team). The England selection committee tried to integrate Halliday into the team by putting him on the wing alongside Carling and Guscott in the centre position, but during the course of 1990’s Five Nations campaign this move resulted in mixed results in two games, the win against Wales and a loss during the Grand Slam decider, against Scotland. Halliday was not a part of this year’s Five Nations, but was nevertheless a part of the England team for 1991’s Rugby World Cup campaign, initially as a utility-back player and playing in a group game against USA and then in the Semi Final victory against Scotland and in the final in which they fell to Australia. In these two games, Halliday was again placed on the right wingand chosen ahead of specialist player on the wing Nigel Heslop: the latter was believed to be fragile after a beating in the gruelling quarter-final match against France as well as the other winger (Chris Oti) is prone to injury. It was thought to be enough of a win for Halliday to remain as the wing’s first option for the following year and in the England team that took home their 1991 Five Nations Championship with a Grand Slam. He was a part of 23 international matches from 1986 until 1992 before resigning following the grand slam in 1992. the two international tries he scored came in the victory of the autumn of 1988 against Australia (partnering Carling at centre during his debut game as captain) and in the 1994 Five Nations victory over Ireland (playing as a wing player).
Halliday’s first cricket appearances included Oxford University from 1980 to
- He scored 348 first-class wickets at 29.00 but only managed to get 50 only once during fourteen innings. He recorded a score of 113 in a match against Kent in 1982, using an attacking team from English test cricketers Graham Dilley and Bob Woolmer. He also played for Dorset between 1981 and 1987, which included 37 Minor Counties Championship matches and three one-day games in the National Westminster Bank Trophy.
