On June 24, 2011, Hackney agreed to sign a single-year contract at Spotland. Hackney had a fantastic pre-season , where he was the goal threat, but an abdominal injury kept his participation to just two games in the league season.

On 14 September 2012 Hackney signed from Conference North side FC Halifax Town on a one-month trial, making his debut as a 60th-minute substitute a day later in a 5–0 victory over Gloucester City.

On 5 July 2012, he joined Wrexham on trial along with ex Coventry City midfielder Kevin Thornton and former Tranmere Rovers goalkeeper Andy Coughlin.

On March 8, the year 2010 Hackney joined Morecambe on a loan of a month which was extended until May 8 with the option of game-day play-offs if required. Because of the 24-hour recall clause included in the agreement, Aidy Boothroyd recalled him back to Colchester on April 15.

Hackney impressed in his first trial with the non-league Woodley Sports scoring two goals in just two games for the reserve team. He joined Carlisle United in February 2005. The first time he played in the first game of Carlisle on the bench during the 3-0 victory of Carlisle away from Canvey Island he only made one more appearance in the remainder of the season as a substitute during a game in a game against Forest Green Rovers. After the season, Carlisle were elevated into League Two, in the 2005-06 season, he made a number of appearances for Carlisle but the majority were after being introduced to games as a substitute. The goal was his debut goal in professional football during the game in the match against Rushden & Diamonds he also scored a second goal during the game. These were two of the six goals he scored during the 30 league appearances he played during the season, which made him an integral part of the promotion-winning team. After playing a key role in helping Carlisle to win their second consecutive promotion into League One. In the first season of Carlisle’s league one, Hackney could only make 18 appearances , which was due to suffering a severe knee injury during December. However, during those 18 games, Hackney did make two scoring goals. Hackney recovered from the knee injury before time to play in the 2007-08 season, which allowed him to be an integral part of the team. This led to his playing 45 league games for the club, scoring eight times. He scored a crucial goal that helped Carlisle finish Leeds United’s unbeaten beginning to the season and assist them in defeating Leeds 3-1. The beginning of the 2008-09 campaign, he played 22 games for Carlisle however he only managed scoring one goal in the match in the match against Crewe Alexandra, however towards the mid- season, his performance slowed down while Jeff Smith took his place in the starting lineup. Colchester United had two inquiries that were rejected both times, one of them was known as a’mickey take’ and then Colchester offered an upgraded’six-figure’ deal that Carlisle agreed to on January 26. In his time with Carlisle, Hackney made over 100 appearances for the club. was instrumental in their successive promotions, and was an instant favourite among the crowd.

Simon joined the Weston Homes Community Stadium during the transfer window of January 2009 for an unspecified amount that is thought to be in the range of 120,000 to 120,000.
