Simbarashe Herbert Stanley Makoni (born 22 March 1950) is a Zimbabwean politician who was a presidential candidate in the March 2008 presidential election , which he won against the current president Robert Mugabe. He was the Minister of Finance and Economic Development in Mugabe’s cabinet from 2000 until 2002. There was a lot of opposition to him throughout his time of Economic Change in Zimbabwe in the early 2000s , since his policies were not in line with those of in the ZANU-PF Party.

Makoni returned to Cabinet in the capacity of Minister for Finance after the resignation of Mugabe on the 15th of July, 2000 after the June 2000 parliamentary elections. In his position as Finance Minister, Makoni was in favor of an economic devaluation for the Zimbabwean dollars, which was a decision which was not favored by Mugabe and was later removed by the late Herbert Murerwa as the Cabinet that was named on August 25, 2002.

Since the presidential elections, Makoni has several times indicated his intention to convert his Muvambo/Kusile/Dawn formation into a formal political party. On 22 July 2008, the formation’s national management committee met and agreed to finalise the transformation of the project into a political party, to be known as the National Alliance for Democracy.

On 5 February 2008, Simba Makoni held a press conference in Harare where he stated that he was challenging Robert Mugabe to become the next President of Zimbabwe. Up to that point he had remained a member of the ZANU-PF Politburo and the party’s Deputy Secretary of Economic Affairs.

Joseph Chinotimba, a war veteran who was responsible for the violent invading of white-owned farms in 2000 and warned Makoni with violence after an announcement regarding his candidacy. A key figure within ZANU-PF, Emmerson Mnangagwa, stated on ZBC TV that by choosing to be a candidate after the party had selected a candidate for this post, Makoni had expelled himself from the party. The Herald newspaper denounced Makoni as a pawn of the United Kingdom whose candidacy was intended to aid in dispersing the ZANU-PF vote to ensure the Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) might be elected.
