They competed in the 1974 World Rowing Championships in Lucerne as a coxless four , and were awarded gold. Brietzke, Mager, Semmler and Decker took home the national event of coxless four each year from 1979 to 1979. The four were victorious at their first gold medal in the year 1975 at the World Rowing Championships in Nottingham and in 1976, the Summer Olympics in Montreal, the 1977 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam however they were defeated to second place by a team of The Soviet Union at the 1978 World Rowing Championships in Cambridge, New Zealand. They again won gold during the 1979 World Rowing Championships in Bled and also won an additional Olympic gold medal in 1980 in Moscow and Moscow, with Jurgen Thiele as their replacement Wolfgang Mager. Following their victory at the Moscow Olympics, Brietzke was the only person in the sport who was awarded with the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold with an honour clasp. the most prestigious sports prize of the GDR.

In the 1972 Summer Olympics, Brietzke and his teammate Mager took home an Olympic gold medal at the event coxless. Mager and Brietzke took home their first East German national championship in the coxless pair in 1973 but just a few weeks later , at the 2003 European Rowing Championships in Moscow they placed fourth in the class of this boat.

Siegfried Brietzke (born 12 June 1952) is a German rower who played for East Germany in the 1972 Summer Olympics as well as during the 1976 Summer Olympics and at 1980’s Summer Olympics.
