He was appointed permanent as an outfielder and cleanup hitter after he enrolled at Meiji University, where he scored 20 hits (.417 BA) during his first year with the Tokyo Big6 Baseball League. He was awarded the Best Nine for 2 years in a row. Then, in his third year he broke the league’s record-breaking total hits record with the 127th hit (Shigeru Takada, Meiji U 1967) by registering 130 hits. In all 100 league matches, he hit at .324 and scored 45 runs, eight of which went over the fence, and won the Best Nine award 6 times.

He became the fourth NPB draftee to record three games of four hits in the first year of their career, and the only rookie to do it at the beginning of April.

On the 21st of May, he registered four modasho (3 or more hits in a single game) and his first walk-off hit in the game against Hiroshima to the delight of the fans at Koshien. He continued to impress at the plate during his subsequent games and earned him an appearance in midseason’s All Star Games, a feat that was only accomplished by another Hanshin rookie in the history of baseball (Teruyoshi Kuji back in 1992).

He also participated for the baseball event in the 2015 Summer Universiade, where Japan won the gold medal.
