For the season 2008, Hirai his playing hours increased substantially as he was a part of eight league games. Hirai first made his J. League debut on April 27, 2008, against Vissel Kobe, coming on as replacement in the 80th minute. After a couple of substitute appearances, he got his league debut on July 26, 2008, with a 1-0 win over Oita Trinita, playing for 45 minutes. Hirai was the first player to score a goal in professional football on July 2 in an J. League Cup match against Yokohama F. Marinos and it was the winner because Gamba took the game with a score of 1-0. In the course of the season, Gamba signed a new contract for five years.
On 12 January 2012 it was announced that Hirai would be joining Albirex Niigata on loan for the 2012 season.
On March 16, 2007 Hirai was given his first call-up in the Japan U-20 team, and received the first cap for U20 an alternate for Cape Verde on 25 March.

Hirai was raised in Tokushima, Shikoku region, and started his professional career playing for the home team Kamihachiman SC before moving to an upper level, joining Premiere SC in 2000.
At 15 years of age He was invited to the Gamba Osaka youth academy. After three years at the academy, Hirai signed his first professional contract with Gamba on the 6th of December, 2005. Hirai was, along with his fellow player Michihiro Yasuda promoted to the senior team and given his number 34 jersey. Hirai made his debut in professional football on December 9th, 2006, at the Emperor’s Cup 4th round match against Sanfrecce Hiroshima. In the next campaign, Hirai took over the number 14 shirt that was that was previously worn by Akihiro Ienaga.
Hirai had arguably one of the best seasons of his career in the 2010 season. He appeared in 31 total matches scoring a career-high 20 goals. On 23 March 2010, Hirai scored first career hat-trick against Singapore Armed Forces in the AFC Champions League. He was later named Man of the match for this performance, which led to a 4–2 victory.
