Shin Jeong-ah is one of the most popular and richest Academic who was born on April 28, 1972 in North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. Shin Jeong-ah (born 28 April 1972) is a South Korean woman who lied about her academic qualifications to get the position of assistant professor of art of Dongguk University and chief curator at the Sungkok the Art Museum. The scandal erupted soon after being appointed in July of 2007 to be the the joint director of the 2009 Gwangju Biennale, when she was found to have faked her academic credentials to claim that she had earned her degrees at Yale University and the University of Kansas and Yale University. Shin received a sentence of 18 years in prison. Dongguk University unsuccessfully sued Yale University in U.S. court for at the least fifty million dollars of damages.

Yale also pointed out that Dongguk did not take action following an investigation by the Korea College Art Association reported she was not receiving her PhD from Yale. Dongguk removed Shin on the 20th of July 2007 “long after Shin’s lies unraveled,” court documents said. Yale added that, in addition to Dongguk’s slow reaction to the warning and its participation with the scandal “we think the jury will certainly consider the fact that the chairman of Dongguk’s board was convicted of soliciting and receiving an illegal government subsidy from Ms. Shin’s lover, who was an adviser to the Korean president.”

While applying to Dongguk University and the 2008 Gwangju Biennale, Shin said she earned BFA (1994) and MBA (1995) degrees at the University of Kansas, and a Ph.D. from Yale University in April 2005. Shin submitted to Dongguk what she called her dissertation, “Guillaume Apollinaire: Catalyst for primitivism, for Picabia and Duchamp,” which was later found to have been submitted to the University of Virginia in 1981 by Greek scholar Ekaterini Samaltanou-Tsiakma. Shin’s highest level of completed education was found to be high school.

An South Korean court handed down an unconstrained one-year sentence to former Byeon Yang-kyoon who was a senior aide to the president who Shin was romantically connected. Shin and Byeon were the subject of headlines in 2007 when Byeon made use of his influence to secure Shin employed as a professor at Dongguk University. Shin was then forced to quit his position as an adviser to the then-President Roh Moo-hyun following the scandal. Byeon was ordered to complete the equivalent of 160 hours community service in exchange for exerting his influence to grant state tax advantages to the Buddhist temple that was founded by an earlier Dongguk University official who helped to hire Shin as an instructor.
