Shilpa Gupta is one of the most popular and richest Cricketer who was born on February 24, 1987 in Delhi, India. Gupta has been involved in a variety of projects that explore the consequences on the people of 1947’s partition. She was among the artists leading The Aar Paar project (2002-2004) which brought art works from diverse artists from across the Pakistan-India border to be displayed in the public space of everyday life. Also, in her work In Our Times (2008) comprised of two microphones on the end of a pole which swings in and out, the inaugural speeches for independence from 1947, delivered by Jinnah from Pakistan along with Nehru of India, both infused with hope, can be heard. The work prompts one to think about the similarities and distinctions between both visions and also to consider the political decisions that both leaders were involved.

Her early works include Untitled (1995-96) In this work, the artist anonymously sent mail, 300 drawings that were stamped and numbered multiple times. The work Untitled (1999) Gupta takes on the role of a pilgrim, who visits holy places to have her canvas blessed. The artwork is an investigation of the mechanisms that govern faith and belief as well as an inquiry into the art of “manifesting collective religious aspirations of society”. The project was re-imagined several times and the most successful one was Blessed Bandwidth”, an online art piece, which was ordered from Tate Modern in 2001. The website allowed visitors to experience a blessing online by visiting websites linked by an internet cable that the artist connected to various websites of worship. On the site it had collected thousands of hyperlinks, users could download God.exe as well as photos from Holy Waters from different religions that explored the ways we create and define our world.

In her work Blame (2001) the artist distributes bottles of simulated blood both indoors and on streets and in trains which say “Blaming you makes me feel so good, so I Blame you for what you cannot control, Your Religion, Your Nationality, I want to Blame you, it makes me feel so good”. This recurrent theme of ‘the act of naming’ is explored in There is No Border Here (2005), 100 Hand drawn maps of India, Someone Else- 100 Books written anonymously or under pseudonyms (2011) to Altered Inheritances (2012-14), which comprises stories of hundreds of people who have changed their surnames.

Gupta was the recipient of the South Asian Visual Artists Collective – Canada’s ‘International Artist of the Year’ award (2004); Sanskriti Prathisthan Award, New Delhi (2004); Transmediale Award, Berlin (2004); runner-up at the Leonardo Global Crossings Award (2005); Bienal Award, Bienal De Cuenca, Ecuador (2011) and YFLO Titan Young Women Achievers Award 2012-2013, New Delhi.

Gupta has always extended the boundaries of her art practice since her very first interactive works in the mid 1990s. She has then followed by touchscreens, websites and large-scale interactive video projections. In Untitled, (2004) Untitled, (2004), seven animated figures that can be controlled actively by viewers, move in accordance with the programmatic commands. Their commands and phrases which are sung as if they were automated, can be heard on the floor directly in between the projected. This led to an interactive series of video projections, Shadow 1,2,3 (2006-7) in which visitors who enter the area of work are recorded using a camera mounted inside the room. the images recorded are projected live in shape of shadows on the wall opposite.
