Shi Tiesheng (Chinese: Shi Tie Sheng 4 January 1951 until December 31 in 2010) was an Chinese novelist and writer, best known for his novel that was the basis for the movie Life on a String. China Daily reported that China Daily stated regarding his essay on the park close to his home, “Many critics have considered I and the Temple of Earth (zh:Wo Yu Di Tan ) as one of the best Chinese prose essays of the 20th century.”

His short stories collections comprise My Faraway Clear Peace River (Wo de yaoyuan de wan) (1985) and Sunday (Libairi) (1988).

A collection of English-language translations of his short stories was published in 1991 as Strings of Life.

In 1996 his novel Notes on Principles (务虚笔记) was published. In selecting it as a notable work of Chinese literature since 1949 which could qualify as an overlooked classic, Professor Shelley W. Chan of Wittenberg University said Notes on Principles was similar to but better than Soul Mountain by Nobel Prize-winner Gao Xingjian.

In 1980 , director Tian Zhuangzhuang made on a short film titled Our Corner on a story by Shi It is the very first movie made by an artist from the China’s Fifth Generation Cinema.

Shi is a native of Beijing and completed his studies at Tsinghua University High School. In 1969, he was one of the “sent-down youth” or urban youth who was sent to a rural area in Shaanxi in the Down to the Countryside Movement of the Cultural Revolution. He was struck by an accident when he was 21 and was later returned to Beijing.

Shi was published first time back in the year 1979. His short story from 1983 “My Faraway Clear Peace River” (Wo De Yao Yuan De Qing Ping Wan ) was awarded the National Excellent Short Story Prize. The story centers around two youths who are sent down and an elderly villager and argues that the poor have more to lose in time than urban youth who are sent to the city. A successor, “A Story of Rustication” (“Chadui de Gushi”) was released in 1986.

Shi’s 1985 novella “Like a Banjo String” (命若琴弦) about a pair of blind musicians, was the basis of the 1991 film Life on a String directed by Chen Kaige.
