Smith was the quarterback of Smith was a quarterback for the North High School football team in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio. After graduating, he enrolled at Miami University in Ohio, playing in the same position, and taking his team of Redhawks in winning their first Mid-American Conference title in each of his three seasons, and an outstanding track record, which was 33-1-1.

The two had known each other since Smith was recruiting McCullough to the RedHawks when the latter was 17, but only learned they were related in 2017. His brother was former CFL All- Star Darrell K. Smith was selected during the 2nd round of 1976’s NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks as a running back. As an Seahawk, Smith was called “The Tank” in reference to the Sherman Tank because of his ability to break the tackles. Smith was the first offensive player selected by the team’s new expansion squad during its inaugural season. Smith is the only Seahawk to rush over 100 yards in one game when he rushed for more than 124 yards in a game against Atlanta Falcons Atlanta Falcons on November 7 1976. Smith was the leader of his team’s rushing the first four seasons of his tenure and eventually racked up 28,429 yards and 3,429 touchdowns over his seven years playing for the team. Smith also was able to catch the ball more than 210 times, resulting in an average of 2,445 yards , and scored 10 scores. He played infrequently with his team the San Diego Chargers in the 1983 season.

Sherman Smith (born November 1 1954) is an ex-professional American football player who played for eight seasons with the Seattle Seahawks and San Diego Chargers between the years 1976 between 1976 and 1983.
