Madore was the Minnesota State Representative for District 37A, which includes Apple Valley and Burnsville, from 2007 to 2009. During her term she was recognized for her efforts to push policies that impact people who are disabled as well as their family members, which included health care, education as well as public transit policies. Shelley Madore ran for the United States Congress in Minnesota’s Second Congressional District in 2010.

In 2003 Madore saw a State Representative on radio justifying his decision to eliminate the funding for a program that was intended to help children with disabilities by declaring that their families should budget more for expenses that are not covered as he did to pay for the cost of sports participation to his child. Incredulous at his uninformed comparision of budgeting for expensive education and health needs in order to plan for additional fees for extracurricular activities and other extracurricular activities, she drove straight into the State Capitol and called the legislator on to the House floor. Disappointed by her story of hardship, he stated that she wasn’t a constituent of the district he was in and returned to his chair. After she had left, Madore told him she would return to make changes to things. And the following year, she was a State Representative candidate in District 37A in Apple Valley. In 2006, when she won she became only the second Democrat in over 30 years to be elected to this district.

When she was a member of Minnesota House of Representatives, Madore concentrated on issues of education, transportation as well as health care, disability advocacy, conservation, and relief from property taxes. She was elected Vice-Chairperson of the Transportation and Transit Subcommittee and the Minnesota Public Transit Association (MPTA) named Madore as a 2007. Friend of Transit. This Friend of Transit award was established to recognize the best in public transportation services and advocacy for public transit in Minnesota.

Shelley Madore is a 2017 Bush Fellow who wants people with disabilities to live a self-determined life. As the mother of two children with special needs and a former state legislator, she has developed programs and advocated for policies that expand opportunities for students with disabilities as they transition into adulthood. With her Bush Fellowship, Madore will build her credentials for leading systemic change by completing a degree in disabilities studies at City of New York School of Professional Studies and by expanding her network of peers in disability advocacy.
