Parkinson played in collegiate sports during the time of Mercer County College and later at New Jersey City University in 2012. In NJCU, Parkinson earned Honorable Mention All-NJAC honors in the fall of 2012 despite missing some of the season because of injuries. The most memorable game he played during his time as the Gothic Knight came in the ECAC Metro Quarterfinals on November 9, 2012, where he blocked all four Brooklyn College penalty kicks in shootouts to ensure that NJCU advance to the semifinals following an unfinished 3-3 tie. In 13 games played for NJCU the defender recorded an average of 2.34 GAA and 5-6-1 record with 87 saves over 1153:35 minutes , while taking 223 shots. The course he was taking included Business Management with a concentration on sports management.

Prior to joining NJCU He played for Mercer County Community College. He was a 2008 NSCAA/adidas Male’s Junior Division I Second-Team All-America College Division selection. After he was not playing in 2009 or the year 2010, he returned to the field in 2011. He received two-time NJCAA All-Region 19 Division I First-Team selection as well as the number. 5 player in Region 19. He was also named First-Team All-Region 19 as well as First-Team Division-I All-Garden States Athletic Conference both 2008 and 2011. In 2010 he was selected for the Super-20 All-Tournament Second Team as part of the Red Bull New York U-23 team that took home the championship. He scored four goals in five games for the club.

Parkinson was a varsity player for four years with the coach Patrick Straw at Herbert H.
