Sheldon Lavell Canley (born April 19th 1968) is an ex- professional American player of the football who played in the National Football League. He played professionally with the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Jets.

Canley was a part in the 1994 Baltimore Stallions of the Canadian Football League who eventually fell in their Grey Cup game to the BC Lions, 23-20. As a backup to the team’s captain Mike Pringle, during the regular season Canley ran 31 times, gaining an impressive 143 yards and a touchdown. He also receiving six passes with 37 yards. He also recorded 13 tackles most of them for special team.

Canley was removed from waivers by the 49ers by the New York Jets. He was to play in his first NFL regular season game for the Jets and rushed at least four times and gaining nine yards during a defeat of 20-0 against the New Orleans Saints on 26 December 1992.

Expected to be selected more highly, Canley was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round of the 1991 NFL Draft after severely injuring his hamstring muscles during the SJSU Pro Day. After spending the first year in the injured reserve pool, Canley was eventually released because of the fierce competition from the 49ers offensive backfield that also included former first-round picks Dexter Carter, Tom Rathman and the 1992 pro-bowler Ricky Watters (a fellow 1991 49ers draftee who was also absent for the entirety of his rookie season due to an injury).

Canley is a native of Santa Barbara, California and was raised within Lompoc, California, where He completed his studies at Lompoc High School. He went to Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California where he obtained the Associate in Arts diploma in the field of Liberal Arts. Then he went on to San Jose State University. After the conclusion of the NCAA season in the year 1991 Canley got selected take part in the East West Shrine Game and the Blue- Gray Football Classic all-star games.

In 1995, Canley signed with the Denver Broncos of the NFL but was released after the pre-season. Again, strong competition from fellow running backs played a large part in his release; this time his teammates included 1995 Pro- Bowler Glyn Milburn and then-unknown rookie Terrell Davis.
