He made his debut as a senior player for Tasmania in the month of October, 1990 after having played in the age group of Tasmania as a state side. He became an all-rounder for the Tasmanian team. He made his debut as a first-class player at the Sheffield Shield the following season and later playing in more than 100 Shield matches for the state team. Following the 2001/02 Australian season, Young was let go by Tasmania and was transferred to Australian Football administration, becoming the general administrator for Tasmanian Football League in Tasmanian Football League in 2010 following a variety of roles in AFL Tasmania. He was appointed the general manager of Eastlake Football Club in Canberra in the year 2016. The player participated in Lancashire League cricket for Bacup Cricket Club between 2001 until 2003, as having played seven games in the Bedfordshire County Cricket Club in the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy during the same time.
He was a part of one season in English county cricket. He played with Gloucestershire County Cricket Club during 1997. After achieving his highest scoreof 237 runs during the game against Derbyshire on July 7, he got drafted to the Australian touring team to replace several bowling injuries as well as the return Australia by Paul Reiffel for the birth of a baby. Young played in the team of Young Australia on their visit to England in 1995. He was in England in the event that a replacement was needed.
