In Boldon Colliery, Tyne and Wear, Reay attended Boldon School between 2000 and 2005. The year 2008 was the first time he began a course in a 3-year Association of Accounting Technicians course at South Tyneside College.
His involvement with junior football was a mix of time with Boldon Colts and Redheugh Boys. Redheugh has produced some notable footballers, including Paul Gascoigne and Don Hutchison. He has cited his favorite time at Redheugh as the moment he scored an important goal at the end game of the Sage Tournament at Durham in 2004 against Redby Town. It was his final touch with the ball for the club prior to his making the move to Darlington. Reay offers some tips to the Redheugh’s young players: “Keep trying and never give up. Winners never quit and quitters never win, this club is the best it gets”. He scored numerous scores during his tenure at Redheugh and also scored a three-goal treble in the game against Leam Rangers and two against South Moor. These goalscoring exploits put Reay on his way to joining Darlington.
Blyth Spartans signed Reay on 22 October 2008 on a two-year contract, thus not only signalling the end of his loan spell with Harrogate Town but also the end of his time at Darlington, where he had become frustrated at the lack of first-team opportunities. On 25 October, in a Fourth Qualifying Round tie in the FA Cup against Sheffield F.C., Reay came off the substitutes’ bench at half time to make his debut with Blyth 1–0 down. He made a big impact, setting up the equaliser and then putting Blyth 2–1 up with an instinctive first time angled drive. Blyth went on to win the tie 3–1, and Reay’s cameo earned him the Man of the Match award. He was also nominated as the FA’s player of the round for his performance. In the First Round Proper of the FA Cup, Reay scored twice as Blyth upset League Two side Shrewsbury Town 3–1, the first of his well-taken goals coming after just 31 seconds. This performance again earned him a nomination for the FA’s player of the round.
