Hawkes (nee Wells), was born in Asuncion, Paraguay and spent the majority of her childhood as a child in Mexico, Chile and Ecuador. The first woman born outside of the United States was a multilingual Miss America. She spent the majority of her teenage period there in Buenos Aires, Argentina. When she was awarded her Miss America title, her parents resided at Holladay, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City. Being named Miss America was seen by many as a way to counter the scandal surrounding the previous year’s winner. The year 1985 saw Deseret Book published a biography of Wells which was composed by Sheri Dew.
Hawkes was a horse racing reporter and college football reporter for ESPN from 1987 to 2002.
Since 2007, Hawkes has worked to help veterans and their families. This includes a program to bring wives and daughters of veterans killed in the line of duty to the Miss America Pageant.
