Shannon O'Brien is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on April 30, 1959 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Four generations of the O’Brien family has held elected positions within the Massachusetts the state government. Great-grandfather Michael T. O’Brien was the proprietor of the funeral home for the family situated in Easthampton, Massachusetts, and was first elected as a state legislator in the year 1930. Their father Edward O’Brien (1933-2004) was a lawyer who was on the Massachusetts Governor’s Council from 1970 until 1975. He resigned the position to contest for Massachusetts Attorney General. He was defeated in his election in 1974 Democratic primaries against Francis X. Belotti; Edward ran for Congress in 1976 but lost to incumbent Silvio Conte. He returned in his position on the Governor’s Council after the 1978 election and was in position until the time of his passing in. Shannon’s mother’s name is Ann. Shannon also has 4 siblings. Erin an employee at the West Roxbury District Court; Gaelan is a court official at the Northampton District Court; Tara an employee from Boston City Hall; and Michael who manages the funeral home of the family situated in Easthampton (job descriptions in 2002).

She served as in the position of Massachusetts State Treasurer for the period 1999 to 2003. She was elected to the position at 1998 in the Massachusetts general election of 1998. She lost her first run for that post in the Massachusetts general elections in 1994. She then became an executive vice president of external affairs for a health care firm. The first female selected in Massachusetts to the statewide office on herself. The office was established following an embezzlement scandal that was major and tightened the controls on the funds that were involved. While she was the Treasurer of the State She restructured the lottery commission as well as The Abandoned properties division in Massachusetts receiving praise for redistributing dormant funds back to the citizens in the state. Additionally, she refinanced the state’s debt, and as a result, saved approximately 500 million dollars. When it came to the infamous Big Dig project in Boston which was later deemed to be the most costly highway construction venture ever in U.S. history, she made public the $2 billion overrun in cost.

She won the Democratic gubernatorial primary in 2002, defeating State Senate President Thomas Birmingham, former Democratic National Committee and American Israel Public Affairs Committee chair Steven Grossman, former United States Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, and former nominee for lieutenant governor Warren Tolman. In this action she became the first woman to win a major party nomination for governor in the Commonwealth. In the general election she garnered 45 percent of the vote to Mitt Romney’s 50 percent.

O’Brien was employed by a major Boston law firm until her father informed her about an unfilled seat on the legislature of the state, which she was able to win. O’Brien was in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1987 to 1993, and she was in the Massachusetts Senate from 1993 through 1995. As a state legislator, she wrote a law that enhanced the penalties for crimes against children , such as neglect and abuse.

Shannon O’Brien was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Her graduation at Yale University in 1981, which was where she served as Captain for the Yale Bulldogs varsity women’s soccer team. She completed her studies at Boston University School of Law in 1985. Boston University School of Law in 1985.
