In February 2012, a provisional patent application was filed for the Hovertrax. The patent was granted in 2014.
The Hovertrax was released to the public in 2013. The Hovertrax was the first self-balancing scooter of the type that become known as hoverboards.
In 2003, Chen created Inventist, Inc., which he established to provide a means by which the company could help him develop more popular ideas and innovations. The company entered the market for retail in 2003, Chen introduced the AquaSkipper which is a hydrofoil powered by humans. The AquaSkipper received numerous awards, including being a finalist in the ISPO’s BrandNew awards. Additionally, the product was featured on the History Channel’s Modern Marvels as part of an innovation contest. Following that, Chen developed and patented an all-wheeled vehicle and licensed the concept to RazorUSA in the year 2006.

Chen was raised living in Beijing, China and attended Beijing Agricultural University for a degree in meteorology of agriculture. The difficult conditions for businesses to start and grow in the middle of the 1980s China caused Chen to move to America to seek more lucrative opportunities.
In 1988, he established CID, Inc. (now named CID Bio-Science), to create scientific instruments for research in agriculture and plant science. The specific products that were developed included a photosynthesis meter as well as an automated leaf scanner, and an analyzer for the canopy of plants.
