Shamsi Ali is one of the most popular and richest Imam who was born on October 5, 1967 in Tana Toa, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Ali is born Muhammad Utteng Ali in the village of Bulukumba in the Kajang district of the Bulukumba Regency in South Sulawesi, Indonesia on October 5 1967. Ali is the youngest of six children (though only five of them survived to adulthood). They were parents from a farming backgrounds, Ali Kadrun (father) and Inong Tippangrom (mother).

In 1996, during the Hajj period, Shamsi Ali got a appointment to address the Consulate General for Indonesia at Jeddah. In Jeddah, he spoke with foreign hajj pilgrims and also one of them, the Indonesian ambassador to the United Nations, Nugroho Wisnumurti who offered the opportunity to visit New York to build a new mosque for the Indonesian community. Shamsi Ali took the offer and relocated from Indonesia to New York in early 1997.

Imam Ali was appointed “Ambassador for Peace” by the International Religious Federation in 2002, and a recipient of the 2008 ICLI Interfaith Award. In 2006, he was named one of seven most influential religious leaders in New York City by New York Magazine. He is also one of 100 recipients of the 2009 Ellis Island Medal of Honor Award. This prestigious non military gold medal is one of the highest awards recognized by US government to native-born and naturalized U.S. citizens with tremendous contributions to the American society and the world and for Shamsi Ali it was due to his endless dedication in building bridges between religious communities.

When he arrived to New York in 1996, the imam was appointed for the Indonesian congregational mosque located situated in Long Island City, Queens. With the help of the Indonesian Mission to the UN, Bank of Indonesia and the Indonesian consulate in New York, the community bought a chemical warehouse at $350,000 located on 31st Street and 48th Avenue in Astoria, Queens. In 2001, he was appointed the deputy Imam at the Islamic Cultural Center of New York which is the largest mosque in the city located at 96th street along with 3rd Ave in Manhattan, however, he resigned in the year 2011.

After completing the primary school at the age of 12 , in the community in Tana Toa in Bulukumba Regency His parents took his son to Darul-Arqam pesantren (Islamic boarding school) located in Makassar that is run by the Muhammadiyah group. After graduation from the school’s boarding in 1987, Shamsi Ali was employed as a teacher till the close of 1988.

He was offered a scholarship by Rabithah Alam Islami to pursue studies in the International Islamic University, Islamabad, Pakistan. He graduated from his undergraduate studies in Tafseer, in 1992, and completed his master’s degree at the same institution in the discipline of Comparative Religion in 1994. While studying at the university in Pakistan, Shamsi Ali also taught at the school that was funded through Saudi Arabia, the Red Crescent Society in Islamabad and later was offered a position as a teacher in the Islamic Education Foundation in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in early 1995.

A few days after the events of 11 September 2001, New York City chose him to represent the Muslim community to visit the scene, where he met President George W. Bush. He also recited a prayer at the memorial service for the September 11th victims at Yankee stadium in the Bronx.
