Muhammad Rizieq Shihab Biography

Muhammad Rizieq Shihab is one of the most popular and richest Imam who was born on August 24, 1965 in Petamburan, Jakarta, Indonesia. Rizieq was born to Husein bin Sidah Alatas and Syarifah Syarifah Alatas in Jakarta, Indonesia on August 24, 1965. His parents were both Arab Indonesians with mixed Hadhrami-Betawi heritage. His father was Sayyid Husein Bin Muhammad bin Husein be Abdullah bin Husein and Muhammad bin Shaikh bin Muhammad Shihab. He was born in 1920. Pandu Arab Indonesia Movement was a boy scouts-like organization for Arab Indonesians that he founded with friends in 1937. This later became PII, the Islamic Scouting Organization of Indonesia. Rizieq, who was 11 months old at the time of his father’s death in 1966, was not sent to boarding school. He continued his studies in the Qur’an and mosques at the age of 4. His mother, a single parent, worked as a bride makeup artist and tailor.

From 1998 to 2003 Rizieq headed the FPI. Since 2003, he has been the Chairman of Executive Tanfidz. In 2013, he was elected Great Imam of FPI.

Rizieq was jailed for seven months in 2003 for inciting his young, white- shirted followers, who often would hide their faces bandit-style behind handkerchiefs, to attack nightspots in Jakarta with clubs and stones. On October 5, 2008 Rizieq was again put in prison for one and half years due to the violent attack against the Aliansi Kebangsaan untuk Kebebasan Beragama dan Berkayakinan (AKKBB) which was holding a demonstration in Monas on June 5,

2008. 59 FPI members were arrested and 12 members of the AKKBB were injured.

Rizieq took a graduate program at the International Islamic University Malaysia, but only for one year, after which he returned to Indonesia before finishing. This was because his scholarship funding was only adequate for him, not his whole family, to stay in Malaysia. Later, he was able to continue his education and earned an MA degree in Shariah from the same university in 2008 with a thesis titled “Pengaruh Pancasila terhadap Pelaksanaan Syariat Islam di Indonesia'” (The Influence of Pancasila on the Implementation of Islamic Laws in Indonesia).

After completing his undergraduate studies, Rizieq spent about a year teaching high school in Saudi Arabia. He returned to Indonesia in 1992. Rizieq was also a religious lecturer and served as the principal of Madrasah Aliyah Jamiat Kheir from 1996 to 1996. Although he had resigned as head of school, Rizieq continued to teach at the school as the teacher or Usul al Fiqh.

Muhammad Rizieq graduated from SDN 1 (Public elementary school No.1) Petamburan in Tanah Abang in Jakarta in 1975. He then continued his middle school education at SMP 40 (Public Middle School No.40), Pejompongan in Central Jakarta in 1976. He was too far away from the school so he transferred to the Bethel Christian Middle School, Petamburan, and graduated in 1979. He attended SMAN 4 in Gambir and graduated in 1982 from the Islamic Village High School in Tangerang. He also took Arabic classes at LIPIA Jakarta. His family considered Rizieq a troubled youth who was known for his tendency to get into fighting. In 1990, Rizieq went to Saudi Arabia to continue his studies at King Saud University. He majored in Usul alfiqh, Education and Cum Laude.

Rizieq declared the establishment of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) on 17 August 1998. The FPI became well known from the Ketapang incident, which occurred in Jakarta on 22 November 1998. Around 200 members of the FPI engaged in riot and affray in a confrontation with opponents. This religious, inter- race and inter-group clash resulted in a number of residential houses and houses of worship being burned and a number of people killed.
