Shahid Jameel is one of the most popular and richest Virologist who was born on August 8, 1957 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. Shahid Jameel was born on 8 August 1957 in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh to Abdul Majid Siddiqui an academic in the field of medicine as well as his spouse Jameela Aleem. He finished his graduate studies (BSc) in Aligarh Muslim University in 1977 and then moved towards his home at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur to pursue the master’s degree (MSc) at the age of 1979. The doctoral program was conducted under the direction of B. A. McFadden at the Department of Biochemistry of Washington State University and, after securing an PhD at the age of 1984, he began his postdoc research on molecular virology along with A. Siddiqui at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Three years later, he was a part of at the Institute as an associate professor in the department of Rheumatology. His time there lasted for one year, and upon returning to India in 1988, he was a part of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) which is where he founded the Virology Research Group. He continued to conduct study at ICGEB as an experienced scientist and director of the virology research group for a period of about 25 years. Then, in 2013, he was transferred over to Wellcome Trust DBT India Alliance as the chief executive officer of the organization and is currently in the post. He was selected as one of five candidates for the position of vice chancellor for Aligarh Muslim University in January 2017 and was in contention after the list was reduced to three by the AMU Court.
Jameel is a member of his seat in the Court of the Aligarh Muslim University and was elected to the University’s governing body in August of 2016. He has been the medical section editor in the VirusDisease journal from Springer (erstwhile Indian Journal of Virology) and is a former member on the boards that oversee editorial content for Journal of Biotechnology and Biomedicine, Journal of Biosciences and Proceedings of the Indian National Science Academy (PINSA). He has given keynote speeches or invited speeches , including his address at the Sir Syed Day Celebration 2016 in Chicago and is a scheduled speaker for the National Conference on Biotechnology and Environment (NCOBE-2017) scheduled to take place in Jamia Millia Islamia in August 2017.
Jameel was awarded his BM Birla Science Prize in Biology at the B. M. Birla Science Centre in 1995. In 1995, the National Academy of Sciences, India appointed him fellow in the year 1996 in 1996. Indian Academy of Sciences followed in the same way one year later. In 2000, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research conferred him with the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, one of the most prestigious Indian science awards in 2000 . He became a fellow in the Indian National Science Academy in 2004. He is a part of the Guha Research Conference as well as the American Society for Microbiology and the speeches given by him are those given by the Dr. M. R. Das Memorial Lecture of the Indian National Science Academy.

Jameel’s work in virology began with his research on Hepatitis B virus in his time in the lab at the laboratory of A. Siddiqui at University of Colorado Health Sciences Center from 1984 until 1987. There, he also studied gene expression in the interleukin-1 group of cytokines. Then, he was credited to have conducted research on the molecular biology of the hepatitis E virus (HEV) as well as HIV. (HIV) and is recognized for identifying the molecular characteristics and transmission pathways for these viruses. He clarified the structure of these viruses and their roles, which have been reported to be beneficial in developing prophylactic and diagnostic protocols. His group discovered the the HIV-1 subtype C has the highest widespread type for infection across India and continues to carry out his research focusing specifically on HIV accessories proteins HIV Co-receptor Dynamics, the hepatitis B, X and SARS virus 3a proteins. He was the head of the group that focused on the development of vaccines to combat HIV-1 subtype C. This project was which was funded by ICGEB and the National Institutes of Health. The research he conducted has been published and referenced in articles and texts, and he has also contributed chapters to the books of other authors. In addition, he published three books: Isocitrate Lyase and Proteinases of Seedlings with high fat content Recent Developments of Animal Virology: Papers Presented at the First ICGEB-UCI Virology Symposium, New Delhi, February 1995, and Advances in Animal Virology: Papers presented during the Second ICGEB-UCI Virology Symposium in New Delhi, November 1998 and has mentored many of postdoctoral, doctoral and master’s students.
