With seven wickets in five matches, Ismail was South Africa’s second-highest wicket taker (with Marizanne Kapp) at the 2014 World Twenty20 in Bangladesh. Ismail was born in Cape Town. She began playing cricket at school, and initially played in a mixed-gender team, as her school had no separate team for girls. Ismail is a practising Muslim, and is the only Muslim woman to have played international cricket for South Africa. As of August 2016, she was studying to become a mechanical engineer.

For the inaugural 2016 season of England’s Women’s Cricket Super League, Ismail signed with the Yorkshire Diamonds. She was one of the team’s three overseas players, along with Australians Alex Blackwell and Beth Mooney, and one of only four South African across the competition. Ismail played in all five matches for the Diamonds, and took six wickets, behind only Danielle Hazell among her teammates. Her best figures were 2/16 from two overs against the Western Storm, while she also took 2/23 from four overs against the Lancashire Thunder.

In 2011, during the World Cup Qualifier in Bangladesh, Ismail took 6/10 in one game against the Netherlands and helped to bowl the team for only 36 runs. She set a new record for ODIs of South Africa, and at the time , was the fourth- highest performance of the entire women’s ODIs. Ismail’s form was a lot better at her 2013 World Cup in India, which she won with 11 wickets across seven games. This was the highest in South Africa and the equal fifth most overall. Her tournament featured numbers that were 4/41 in the battle against Australia 2/18 against Pakistan and 2/22 in Sri Lanka.

Ismail made her debut as a senior player in Western Province in October 2005 (aged 17) in the 2005-06 season in South Africa’s Women’s Provincial League. She scored 15 wickets during her first season. This was the second most in Western Province behind Shandre Fritz and Alexis le Breton. It was followed by 21 wickets in the 2007-08 season that was the sixth highest in the tournament. Ismail has been a part of the final of the Provincial League several occasions during her career. She moved between Western Province to Gauteng for the 2015-16 season.

Ismail was the first international player to make her debut in South Africa in January 2007 (aged 18) in an One Day International (ODI) against Pakistan. The Test as well as Twenty20 International debuts came in the same year, playing against New Zealand and the Netherlands. She was called up as a short-term replacement for New Zealander Rachel Priest (one of the team’s overseas players), who had had to return to her home country for a period. On debut against the Melbourne Stars, Ismail took 3/10 from four overs, together with Molly Strano (5/15) helping restrict the Stars to just 85/9 from 20 overs. She played only one more game (also against the Stars) before Priest returned to the line-up, but failed to take a wicket.
