Seun Ogunkoya is one of the most popular and richest Athletics Competitor who was born on December 28, 1977 in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. Seun Ogunkoya (born 28 December 1977) is a Nigerian sprinter, and a twice African Championships gold medalist over 100 meters.

Also, he set his personal records in the range of 20.50 second in the 200m which he achieved during July 1997 at Nice as well as 6.52 second in 60 meters that he set during February of 1998, in Budapest.

Ogunkoya reportedly attempted a comeback in 2004, with a new training base in Kenya. It did not materialize to anything, but he tried to return again in

2007. He trained with Tobias Igwe in Umuahia. He competed in the 2007 Track and Field Championship in Nigeria, but failed to progress from round one.

He took part in his 1996 Summer Olympics in which he was eliminated in the quarterfinals in the 200m race after which he won the gold medal for the 100m in the 1996 World Junior Championships the next month. In 1997, he reached the quarter-finals of the 1997 World Championships. In the relay event at 1997 World Championships, four others took part on the Nigerian team. They finished up winning the gold medal.

The place of birth was Akure and is the cousin to Falilat Ogunkoya. He increased his personal bests by 10.43 seconds back in the year 1995, to 10.15 seconds when he ran in Makurdi in the 10th National Sports Festival, to 9.97 seconds in July 1997 at Formia. This made him the fastest sprinter in history to break the 10-second mark at 19 years and 197 days. It was which was that was broken by Yohan Blake (19 years, 196 days). Ogunkoya said his belief that “it is natural to be aiming at the world record”. The coach of his was Tony Osheku.

Ogunkoya was the winner of the 100m course at the 1996 African Championships and became Nigerian champion in both 1996 and 1997. In 1998 he took the Weltklasse Zurich race by clocking 9.96 seconds, which was a new personal best. He then went on to taking the title at in the 1998 African Championships in another personal best and a record-setting championship time of 9.94 seconds. In September, he placed fourth in the IAAF Grand Prix Final before winning the silver medal at the 1998 World Cup. In this event, he made improvements to his personal best to 9.92 seconds. This was also his best ever as well as an Nigerian record. He also took home bronze at the 4-x 100m relay, in conjunction with his African team.

Ogunkoya ran in 10.27 seconds as a season’s best in 1999. In July 2000 he ran in 10.23 seconds in Lagos. In the same year he was named for the Olympic squad, but fell through with an eighth and last place in his 100 metres heat. He moved to Prague where he recorded a 10.72 second race in June 2003.
