Cosmi was born in 1958 in Ponte San Giovanni, a Perugia frazione. His father, a cyclist enthusiast, referred to him as Serse after the brother of Fausto Coppi who was a cycling enthusiast who passed away after the fall of an athletic race. He taught for nine years as a principal school teacher and also played in amateur football during his off time with local teams like Deruta, Cannara, Spello and Pontevecchio playing the role of a midfielder.
In the season of 2004-05, Cosmi managed to win the league and lead the team into Serie A, but he was then forced to leave due to disagreements with the club’s Chairman Enrico Preziosi, before the removal to Genoa as a whole down to Serie C1 because of match frauds.
However, after a disappointing series of results, including elimination in Champions League and results in Serie A much below the expected results, Cosmi was finally fired on 10 February 2006.
On 28 February 2007 he was appointed head coach of Serie B club Brescia. On his very first match after replacing Mario Somma, Cosmi led Brescia to an astonishing 3–1 result against Serie B leaders Juventus. He was fired on September 2008 due to poor result to make room for new boss Nedo Sonetti.
After being praised as a coach by Luciano Gaucci, in 2000 Cosmi was appointed the director of Perugia within the Serie A. He coached the team for four years consecutively and won the UEFA Intertoto Cup, showing an impressive coaching ability and launching numerous players such as the 2006 FIFA World Cup winner Marco Materazzi (who achieved the record with 12 scores in one season under the guidance of Cosmi) Then-unknown Japanese Hidetoshi Nakata Fabrizio Miccoli Fabio Grosso, and Fabio Liverani. Cosmi’s time at Perugia was for four years in which he guided the marginal Umbrian side to victory at the 2003 UEFA Intertoto Cup.

Serse Cosmi (born 5 May 1958) is a Italian football coach who is currently in charge of Serie B team Perugia.
He began his coaching profession in latter part of the 1980s in Ellera as a youth team coach. His first appearance as a first coach for the team was in 1990 when he was appointed to head coach Pontevecchio which was a modest club from the home town , Ponte San Giovanni. Cosmi was able to take it from Prima Categoria (fourth highest level of professional leagues for amateurs within Italy) up to Serie D (the top one) within five years. After that, he was able to join Arezzo and led the team to Serie D to Serie C1 within five extremely successful years.
In 2004 Cosmi left Perugia, after the team went relegated at the end of the season, and joined Genoa of Serie B, with the clear goal to bring the rossoblu back to Serie A.
