In January of this year, Canavero and his team issued a press statement in which they claimed that they had conducted a successful head-transplant on a monkey that claimed to have survived the procedure with no any neurological damage and was alive for over 20 hours. The spinal cord did not rejoin to the brain, and the patient was unable to speak for the entire. The press release also stated that they were testing their experiments with human cadavers prior the scheduled head transplant for humans at the time of Christmas 2017.

In November 2017, Canavero claimed to have performed a successful head transplant.

Canavero received the attention of media in 2015 following saying that he was extremely close to completing an operation to transplant the head of a person. Those who promote such claims and who would subject any human being to unproven cruel surgery merit not headlines but only contempt and condemnation.”
