Selvin Valentin Pennant Taylor (born on January 4, 1950) is an Guatemalan former soccer player and one of the country’s most prolific goal scorers of all time. He was a player for Deportes Aviacion in the Chilean First Division for three years. He was a part of the Guatemala national team from 1969 to the year 1980 and played for three World Cup qualifying campaigns and during the 1976 Olympic Tournament.

Pennant also participated in the 1974 and 1978 (where Pennant missed the final stage in Mexico at the end of October in 1977, having moved to Chile) as well as 1982 World Cup qualifying processes. In the latter one, on 27 November 1980 Pennant was a goal scorer in the victory of 3-0 against Costa Rica which as of 2011, is the final time Guatemala has defeated Costa Rica away. In total, Pennant scored 5 goals in 11 World Cup qualification matches.

The coach Hernan Carrasco Vivanco took Pennant into Aviacion in 1977 for the goalie’s season. during his first season there the striker was able to score seven goals during the league, and two goals in the domestic cup. The following year, Pennant scored another seven goals, and Aviacion was able to improve to an 8th place finishing. The best season for Pennant during his time in Chilean soccer came in his 3rd (1979) in which Pennant scored ten league goals , seven of which were scored during the first seven games which included a hat-trick in the match against Everton de Vina del Mar. In contrast to previous seasons, the 1979 campaign featured an initial group phase in order to be able to qualify for a knockout phase. Aviacion was, despite having the third-best overall record they fell just only one place short of qualification, as they came in third place in a group that included Colo Colo and Club Universidad de Chile.

Pennant was first chosen to his place on the Guatemala nation’s team back in the year 1969 and was a participant in the IV CONCACAF Championship that year. In 1971 Pennant was part of the national team that tried to qualify for at the 1972 Olympic Games, without success. A few years later he was able to help Guatemala be able to participate in an Olympic Games in 1976 Games in Montreal, in which he played with Israel (0-0) He also played the final fifteen minutes in a loss in the match against Michel Platini’s France and also in the game with Mexico (1-1).

Pennant is a centre forward who had a strong aerial ability, began his professional career at Tipografia Nacional in the year 1969, in which he played alongside his two brothers. Eventually, the move towards Cementos Novella, where he was the joint top goal scorer for the 1972 season of the league, and the sole top scorer of next year. When Cementos Novella disappeared after the 1973 season due to a lack of sponsors, Pennant joined Aurora FC and would be a star in both the scoring and the game. He was the top scorer of the season of 1975 with 33 goals, which was tied the Municipal’s Julio Cesar Anderson, and taking the team to their fourth-ever national championship and their first since 1968. Aurora was able to win their first Copa Fraternidad in beating many of the top teams from Central America, including defending champions Platense with a large part to the attacking duo of Pennant along with Rene Morales each contributing with seven goals in the tournament to the team’s success. Pennant’s success on the international stage and in his home country led Chilean Club Deportes Aviacion to seek his help.

He returned to Guatemala in 1980, again playing for Aurora, where he would retire in 1982 after having scored 87 career goals for the club – third-most ever behind Jorge Roldán (111) and Edgar Arriaza (88) – and over 190 goals during his entire career.
