Sean Andrew Stokes (February 6 1983 – July 30 July 30, 2007) was an United States Marine who posthumously was awarded the Silver Star for actions while serving with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines during the Second Battle of Fallujah.

In the early part of 2004, Lance Corporal Stokes was dismissed from his unit with no permission to assist family members escape domestic violence. After moving her into an apartment, Stokes returned to Camp Pendleton and was later in court martial, reduced to the status of Private and was transferred onto Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines (3/1).

In 2006, Stokes was featured in an episode of “Shootout!” on the History Channel entitled “D-Day: Fallujah”, wherein his actions in 2004 are dramatized while he and other Marines recount the details.

Military historian Patrick K. O’Donnell was embedded with Stokes’ platoon for one year leading up to and during their deployment to Fallujah, and Stokes is a prominent figure in his 2006 non-fiction book We Were One: Shoulder to Shoulder with the Marines Who Took Fallujah.

After arriving in 3/1 Stokes was assigned in Fallujah, Iraq, where in November 2004, he took part as a participant in Operation Phantom Fury.

When they entered the structure his group was attacked by automatic rifle fire from inside. In spite of danger and danger, Corporal Stokes moved forward within the tight confines of the building to defend himself against hostile fire, and killed the insurgent prior to his colleagues Marines were injured. On the 17th of November an enemy hand grenade struck Corporal Stokes while he was clearing of a small dwelling, hurting him. Even though he was injured and dazed by the blast, instead of trying to escape and save himself, he chose to leave the structure, he opted to ensure that the Marines in the area were secure and began to snuff out the enemies inside the house using his rifle. The fire he put out enabled all of the members in his group to secure a location outside the house which was where they arranged an assault and returned to the building, taking out the enemy in an attack counter- insurgency. Corporal Stokes battled throughout Fallujah with the determination to snare the enemy while protecting the Marines close to him at all cost. Through his heroic courage even in the face of extreme danger, his zealous determination and unwavering devotion to the mission and duty, Corporal Stokes earned a lot of respect for himself and upheld the best tradition in the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

In 2005, Stokes returned to Iraq, this time near the city of Haditha.
