Kiriakou’s lawyers wanted to question Shane (named in the charge as “Journalist B” in the indictment) in the defense of his client, however they they rescinded the subpoena. The prosecution had claimed that Kiriakou was an alleged source for Shane’s report in 2008 that identified the non-covert CIA employees Deuce Martinez as an interrogator for Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the responsible for the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. However, Martinez was not a participant in the lengthy pre-interrogation waterboarding process of “KSM”. Shane wrote about his connection and Kiriakou in a unique, first- person account, published through The New York Times of an investigative reporter’s involvement in a report that involved national security and secret.

Shane earned a bachelor’s degree at Williams College and a master’s from Oxford University. His journalism career began as a news assistant at The Washington Star (1979-1980) and later as an editor for local news at The Greensboro (NC) News & Record (1980-1983). He then became a reporter at The Baltimore Sun (1983-2004) He was a reporter for The Baltimore Sun during two consecutive years as the Moscow reporter (1988-1991). Since 2004, he’s been a reporter for national news at The New York Times.
Prior to becoming a reporter for The New York Times, from 1983 until 2004, Shane worked as a journalist at The Baltimore Sun covering a wide range of topics. This book tells the story of Anwar al-Awlaki, who won fame as an imam outside Washington after the 9/11 attacks but eventually joined Al Qaeda in Yemen and was killed by a drone strike in 2011 on the orders of the then President Obama.
