Brooks was born in 1972 on the 6th of April, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was adopted when he was born. Brooks has stated himself on his former MySpace profile in the form of “a poor black child from the mean streets of West Philly…the REAL West Philly, not that suburb ‘Fresh Prince’ was from.” Brooks father died at the age of 12 and he was taken care of by his mother and two elder sisters. As a child, Brooks studied classical piano between the ages of 5 and 15 years old, and was a part of numerous recitals. Through the teen years, Brooks was involved in his church. He was also an athlete in the pool, ran track and played in JV baseball (for which he was awarded an honorary letter). Between the ages of 11-18, the actor appeared in a variety of productions for a local theater group. Later, when at the age of 19, he started studying acting in the John Barth acting studios in Philadelphia.

Through the 2000s, Brooks continued to pursue his acting career. He landed numerous TV and film roles, including the UPN’s The Parkers, CBS’s Hack and the Fox’s Jonny Zero, New Line Cinema’s Dumb and Dumberer and Disney’s Mr. 3000. Brooks also pursued his commercial career, appearing in commercials for some of the biggest brands, like Mcdonald’s The WE Network, and Dodge Truck. Brooks added another catchy catchy phrase to his list of accomplishments when he appeared in one of”Dr. Scholl’s “Are You Gellin’?” TV commercials. In 2004 Brooks was cast as his Church’s Chicken on their television and radio advertisements. Between 2009 and 2010, he was presenter of the Verizon Fios “Home 2.0 Makover Show” A series of promo informational commercials for the company.

In January 2002, Scott called into the Howard Stern show to say that although he was making up to $5000 a night doing appearances at bars, he wanted to do something else before he was only ever known as “The Wassup Guy”. Howard told him he should keep doing it until there’s no more money, but Scott insisted that he was finished with doing “Wassup Guy” appearances.

As production started on commercials Stone was contacted by Brooks and advised him to visit New York for an audition. Brooks had never been professionally acted before and the audition was only his second time auditioning. After several weeks of auditions and three call-backs, Brooks overcame 250 other actors and was offered the character in the film “Dookie.” Commercials shot for three weeks in the month of November at various locations in New York City. In the short time, Brooks continued to work as a bouncer, even after the commercials were released in the city, not knowing that his life was going to be changed.

When Brooks worked on his Philadelphia nightclub scene the former friend of his Charles Stone was making a name for himself in New York City as a director of music video. Since the two were at high school Stone was often a part of Brooks in film projects at school, as well as shorts, and music videos. It was 1998 when Stone created the first “Whassup” concept; a three-minute movie titled True. When he made his film Stone said to Brooks, “It’s based on us, and something we used to do back in the day.”

To this day, the commercials are routinely featured in magazine articles and television specials as one of the top 10 TV commercials and Super Bowl commercials of all time. The commercials were nominated for an Emmy, won the 2000 Grand Clio Award for Best Campaign and Best Commercial, and “Wasabi” (one of Brooks’ solo commercials) won the 2000 Cannes Film Festival Golden Lion Award for Best Commercial in the world.
