In 1978, a sprain to Newhouse during the final stretch of the season helped him be a key player towards another Super Bowl appearance. The team that he played against was Washington Redskins Washington Redskins on Thanksgiving he recorded 16 carries and two touchdowns and 122 yards and 103 running yards as well as a 59-yard run that led to the field goal. A week later, when playing with the Philadelphia Eagles, he scored on a 44-yard pass screen catch and an uninvolved run of one yard. In the playoff game of the first round with Atlanta Falcons in the first round of playoffs Atlanta Falcons, he had 17 carries, resulting in two touchdowns and 66 yards. The following week , in the conference final contest against Los Angeles Rams, he scored a score of four yards which led the Cowboys ahead by 14-0 in the fourth quarter. Laidlaw scored seven touchdowns over the six games before Super Bowl XIII.
On September 11, 1980, he was signed as a free agent by the New York Giants, where he played mainly on special teams, before he asked for and was given his release on October 31.
On August 26, 1980, he was released after the team gave his roster spot to rookie Timmy Newsome. During his time with the Cowboys, although his effectiveness was limited by a series of injuries, he still managed to be a key backup and a part of three Super Bowl teams.
The year 1977 was the first time he sustained an injury to his hamstring during training camp, which restricted the amount of time he played in preseason and prevented from competing in a serious manner for the fullback position with Newhouse. As a backup utilized mostly in passing opportunities, he had five receptions, each for 15 yards, and 9 runs to gain 60 yards. He was on the Super Bowl XII winning team.

Laidlaw was picked for his team the Dallas Cowboys in the fourteenth round (356th overall) of the 1975 NFL Draft, also known as the Dirty Dozen draft. When he was a rookie He was mostly used in situations with short yards, until he was struck by a mid-season knee injury that put Laidlaw on injured reserve. He was a player in 1976 when he was replaced by the injured Robert Newhouse in the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, rushing for the 104-yard mark on 19 carries. He also had seven receptions for 66 yards. He was unable to play for three games due to serious rib injuries he sustained in the match against the Baltimore Colts and his return was also hampered by a bout of flu. He ended up with 424 rushing yards (third among the players) and 325 yards receiving (third in the league) and 84 points scored (fourth in the league).
In 1979, he was set to contend with Newhouse for the starting fullback job, but Laidlaw suffered a pulled hamstring in training camp and was unable to make a serious challenge. After Newhouse was limited with a leg injury he sustained in the season opener, him and Laidlaw were used as interchangeable play messengers during the first half of the season. Laidlaw could never regain his full strength however, because of a cyst he had behind his left knee that was removed until the offseason.
